Senior Claims Adjuster

Specialty Program Group•Bozeman, MT

About The Position

Proper Insurance, a Managing General Agent and division of SPG with full claims handling authority, provides commercial insurance coverage designed for short-term rental properties. The Senior Claims Specialist manages a property-claims caseload weighted toward higher-complexity files, including coverage disputes, large losses, and litigated claims. The role operates with substantial independence and serves as an authority on Proper’s property coverage forms, escalating only genuinely novel or precedent-setting issues. It also mentors less-tenured adjusters and helps establish high standards for communication, documentation, and claim handling.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of property claims adjusting experience, including demonstrated experience with coverage disputes, large losses, or litigated files.
  • Deep working knowledge of residential or short-term-rental-specific property coverage forms.
  • Advanced proficiency with Xactimate, including custom macros or profiles and sketch tools.
  • Strong written communication skills and a track record of audit-ready documentation.
  • Demonstrated autonomy and sound judgment on complex claim decisions.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or peer-reviewing other adjusters.
  • Active adjuster license(s) as required by jurisdiction.

  • Manage a caseload of property claims weighted toward high-complexity, large-loss, and litigation files, with latitude to handle specialty files beyond the core diary.
  • Make the large majority of claim decisions autonomously and escalate only genuinely novel or precedent-setting issues.
  • Build and validate advanced Xactimate estimates using custom macros, profiles, and sketch tools, and peer-review estimates for less-tenured adjusters.
  • Serve as the point of contact for insureds navigating difficult or high-stakes claims, elevate their experience, and independently de-escalate disputes.
  • Model the communication standard used to coach the rest of the team.
  • Produce defense-ready file documentation that clearly articulates coverage positions and maintain a zero-miss compliance record.
  • Advise on emerging regulatory issues.
  • Investigate proactively and preserve subrogation rights on complex property claims.
  • Coach and mentor less-tenured adjusters on file handling, documentation, and difficult conversations.
