Senior Capacity Planner

DigitalOceanSeattle, WA
Hybrid

About The Position

DigitalOcean is seeking a Senior Capacity Planner passionate about building programs and playbooks to ensure internal teams reliably and predictably receive the physical infrastructure they need. This role involves partnering with internal teams that deploy bare metal servers, developing playbooks, processes, and tracking mechanisms for smooth infrastructure provisioning and maintenance by Cloud Operations. The position also includes owning the coordination of budget requests, procurement, and deployment for new hardware to support these internal customers, acting as the primary contact for capacity augmentations and bridging the physical infrastructure layer with the software and systems running on top of it.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in capacity planning, infrastructure operations, or program/project management in a technical environment
  • Strong cross-functional communication and stakeholder management skills, including working with both technical and non-technical internal stakeholders
  • Experience working with bare metal or physical server infrastructure
  • Solid understanding of containerized workloads (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes) and how they consume underlying physical capacity
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals as they relate to infrastructure deployment
  • Experience using observability tools (metrics, logging, monitoring) to inform infrastructure decisions
  • Strong program-building skills — comfortable creating structure, documentation, and playbooks from scratch
  • Experience coordinating budget requests and procurement processes for hardware
  • Ability to translate internal customer needs — both infrastructure and software-driven — into actionable capacity plans
  • Comfort with SQL and data visualization tools (e.g. Looker, Grafana) for tracking and reporting

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a consultant or technical project manager driving nebulous projects to completion
  • Experience with data center inventory tools such as dcTrack or Netbox

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a program for managing internal-use physical infrastructure, from intake through deployment
  • Partner with internal teams who deploy bare metal servers to understand their capacity tracking needs and forecast future requirements, including how their software architecture (containerized workloads, networking, service dependencies) drives those needs
  • Design and document playbooks that enable Cloud Operations to provision and maintain internal customers' infrastructure independently
  • Coordinate budget requests for new hardware on behalf of internal customers, ensuring alignment with procurement timelines
  • Own end-to-end procurement coordination for internal infrastructure, from request through delivery
  • Plan and execute server augments on behalf of internal customers based on their tracked capacity needs
  • Track rack, power, and hardware capacity for internally-used physical infrastructure across data centers
  • Use observability data (metrics, logs, dashboards) to validate capacity assumptions and catch emerging bottlenecks before they impact internal customers
  • Identify opportunities to standardize or streamline how internal teams request and receive infrastructure
  • Build reporting and dashboards to give internal customers and stakeholders visibility into capacity status and timelines
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between internal infrastructure customers and Cloud Operations for capacity-related needs

Benefits

  • Reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning's 10,000+ courses
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Local Employee Meetups
  • Flexible time off policy
  • Bonus in addition to base salary
