About The Position

The Utah Department of Corrections is looking for a Senior Boiler Technician to work in their Salt Lake City, Utah, Correctional Facility. This is a full-time, year-round employment opportunity with 12 paid holidays each year. The Senior Boiler Technician will perform training and supervision of inmates in Boiler Operations, ensuring they become team-oriented to succeed outside the prison environment. The role also involves enforcing security regulations and performing inmate supervision.

Requirements

  • Experience with Industrial Boilers: Operating and maintaining high-pressure steam and hot water boilers, combustion systems, and high-pressure vessels.
  • System Maintenance: Expertise in installing and maintaining steam, condensate, and hydronic heating piping, as well as steam traps and pressure regulators.
  • Mechanical Proficiency: Skilled in inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing boiler systems, including pump and motor maintenance.
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes and Local/State Boiler Codes.
  • 2-5+ years of experience in industrial boiler operation, maintenance, or repair.
  • Knowledge of Lockout/Tagout procedures, confined space entry, and hazardous energy control.
  • Ability to speak clearly, listen effectively, and read/interpret blueprints and technical manuals.
  • Requires strenuous physical exertion, including frequent climbing of ladders, lifting objects over 50 pounds, and crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
  • Exposure to heat, steam, noise, chemicals, and extreme outdoor weather.
  • Subject to Driver Eligibility standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given for candidates who can evacuate/recharge air conditioning systems working knowledge.
  • Preference for OSHA Safety Certification, NFPA credentials, and EPA 608 Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide training and supervision of inmates in Boiler Operations at a prison facility.
  • Ensure inmates are helped to become team-oriented with the goal to enable them to succeed outside of the prison environment.
  • Enforce security regulations and perform inmate supervision.
  • Operates and maintains high/low pressure steam, electric, and other boiler types.
  • Troubleshoots problems, performs preventative maintenance on machinery.
  • Teaches inmates principles and techniques of the trade, including adherence to industry and safety standards.
  • Performs basic diagnostics on electrical circuits, instrumentation, sensors, and control panels.
  • Prepares inmate incident and disciplinary reports and manages inmate movement.
