Senior Biomedical Engineer

MiniMed•Los Angeles, CA
•$87,000 - $149,000

About The Position

This position is part of MiniMed’s Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Sensor R&D team and supports the development of next-generation CGM products and sustaining R&D. The Senior Biomedical Engineer leads failure analysis throughout multiple phases of sensor product development and contributes to sustaining, continuous improvement, and development activities. The role interfaces with R&D, regulatory, quality, reliability, and clinical teams as appropriate. The position involves hands-on laboratory work, investigating failures in complex microfabricated electrochemical biosensors, defining analysis strategies, and recommending corrective actions. The engineer develops and performs failure-analysis methods, documents findings in formal reports, uses product failure-mode knowledge to assess actual and potential failures, and works with R&D and quality colleagues to improve product quality, reliability, manufacturability, and functionality. The role also contributes to CGM subsystem development and helps build analytical methods and capabilities for future technologies and products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering field, with 5 or more years of professional experience.
  • Medical device industry experience.
  • Experience in product design and development in an R&D environment.
  • Experience with mechanical and/or electrochemical systems.
  • Direct experience in characterization, design of experiments, and data analysis methodologies, including T-tests, ANOVA, and significance testing.
  • Knowledge of in-vitro and in-vivo testing of subcutaneous medical devices.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and identify root causes of failures in complex microfabricated electrochemical biosensors.
  • Develop, document, and perform failure analyses on systems and components to determine failure mechanisms and root causes.
  • Write formal analysis reports that clearly and accurately communicate findings to submitters and broader audiences.
  • Use knowledge of product failure modes to work with technicians and other R&D engineers in assessing existing and potential failures.
  • Work with R&D and quality engineers to identify opportunities to improve product quality, reliability, manufacturability, and functionality.
  • Initiate and lead implementation of improvements identified through continuous improvement efforts.
  • Obtain, interpret, and use data from formal testing, complaint handling, and other document repositories.
  • Develop new test methodologies to support failure analysis of components and products.
  • Identify and research component and system failures during early product development to improve product quality and reliability.
  • Conduct hands-on laboratory work, define failure-analysis strategies, and recommend corrective actions or fixes at different stages of product development.
  • Develop analytical methodologies and support equipment acquisitions to establish failure-analysis capabilities for future technologies and products.
  • Contribute to development of continuous glucose monitoring subsystems in support of group goals.
