This position is part of the UW support career progression and may report to a Senior Specialist, UW Support, Team Leader, or to a Team Manager, Underwriting Support. The Bilingual Underwriting Assistant is an individual contributor within the Underwriting Support Unit of the product field operations. The individual is expected to actively develop their knowledge and understanding of the fundamental skills and functions of the underwriting support process, underwriting process, risk analysis, and operational drivers.

Requirements

  • Fluency in both English and French (verbal and written) is essential, as a significant portion of the daily tasks handled by the employee will in French.
  • 1-3 years of related insurance experience and/or training; or equivalent, a relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Prioritizing – able to navigate and switch between multiple proprietary, vendor, web-based, and standard computer systems.
  • Microsoft Office – proficiency in Excel, Word and Powerpoint
  • Learning Agility – willingness to learn from experiences and new situations.
  • Client Servicing – ability to anticipate client (internal and external) needs and act proactively.
  • Problem Solving – identify problems and solutions matched to the appropriate solutions.
  • Attention to Detail – demonstrate attention to detail to ensure accurate documentation is maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Handles the most complex accounts and provides technical guidance to other junior support staff.
  • Partners with regional underwriters and/or more senior UW Support employees in the end-to-end processing of new and renewal business.
  • Evaluates new and renewal submissions against prescribed criteria to determine completeness; documents outstanding items and include them in communication to an underwriter for review.
  • Assists in the follow-up and securing of outstanding items from the broker.
  • Works closely with underwriters and CoE partners to develop and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Identifies and resolves account alerts and blocks during the submission process to avoid account conflicts.
  • Forwards individual lines of business to Shared Services for rating upon underwriting instructions.
  • Trains on and demonstrates proficiency in utilizing underwriting systems.
  • Performs data analytics, remodeling, when necessary, referral documentation preparation and completion, as well as form checklist and working approval.
  • Reviews location data and CAT modeling results that are reported accurately, as appropriate.
  • Analyzes loss information and financial statements to facilitate quote development.
  • Pre-populates loss rating models.
  • Assists with the issuance of quotes, binders, policies, endorsements, and cancellations within prescribed timelines.
  • Requests individual policy filings as needed.
  • Prepares policy writing instructions for Shared Services and premium billings.
  • Manages bureau crits on assigned accounts and follows up with brokers on outstanding information.
  • Prepares documents for reinsurance quotes for underwriting.
  • Completes post-issuance policy review and documents all discrepancies for review with Sr. UA, Team Lead, or account underwriter.
  • Forwards discrepancies to Shared Services for correction as agreed.
  • Assists underwriters with broker follow-ups on outstanding subjectivities, including Legal Agreements, Collateral, Premium, UM/UIM-PIP forms.
  • Updates systems as required.
  • Tracks premium booking and policy issuance to ensure LOB metrics are met.
  • Escalates issues to Sr. UA, Team Lead, or account underwriter as needed.
  • Performs and applies knowledge of LOB underwriting rules and/or guidelines for pre-analysis support of submission in preparation for further analysis for quoting stage.
  • Communicates account status to manager or underwriter to ensure completion of outstanding items needed to execute policy issuance and premium collection.
  • Exhibits a customer service mindset by proactively engaging with internal and external clients; promptly responding to all phone calls and/or email correspondence.
  • Maintains accurate and updated files for all accounts in accordance with internal service standards and procedures.
  • Attends broker or client meetings as requested by underwriting.
  • Consistently meets service levels agreements and metrics in terms of volume, accuracy, and quality.
