Senior Battery Systems Engineer

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Senior Battery Systems Engineer leads cross-functional integration of new OEM battery packs into Redwood Materials’ stationary energy storage system architecture within the Energy Storage engineering function. The role independently owns each integrated pack’s system architecture, requirements, and interface definitions, aligning mechanical, electrical, controls, power electronics, and software engineering on a common technical baseline. The engineer serves as the technical point of contact for external OEMs and suppliers on pack-level integration, adapting automotive packs to off-vehicle duty cycles with limited precedent. The position is reviewed at critical design decision points and is accountable for ensuring system-level requirements are complete, testable, and verified. This is a fully on-site role at 100 Hooper, with occasional travel to sites and vendors, up to 10% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field and 5+ years of systems or design engineering experience, or a Master's degree and 3+ years of experience.
  • Working knowledge of lithium-ion battery pack architecture, battery management systems, and pack communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with energy storage systems, hybrid or electric powertrain development, or PV system development.
  • Ability to write clear, testable engineering requirements and manage them in a requirements management tool.
  • Effective communication skills to lead technical alignment across engineering disciplines and with external OEMs.
  • Ability to travel to sites and vendors up to 10% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional integration of new OEM battery packs from technical intake through validation and deployment.
  • Own system-level architecture, performance, and functional requirements for integrated packs, and derive subsystem and component requirements with design engineers.
  • Define and maintain mechanical, electrical, communication, and software interfaces between OEM packs and the energy storage system.
  • Lead technical discussions with OEMs and suppliers to obtain pack data, resolve integration issues, and agree on engineering solutions.
  • Lead DFMEAs, hazard analyses, and risk assessments for integrated packs, and track mitigations to closure.
  • Ensure integrated systems comply with applicable UL and industry standards.
  • Align mechanical, electrical, controls, power electronics, and software engineering on a common technical baseline.
  • Ensure system-level requirements are complete, testable, and verified.
