About The Position

Grafana Labs is hiring a remote Senior Backend Software Engineer for its Databases organization, which builds and operates telemetry databases including Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope. These databases are delivered as hosted services in Grafana Cloud and as on-premise enterprise solutions. The systems are multi-tenant distributed services implemented in Go and run at scale on Kubernetes across AWS, GCP, and Azure. The position is remote and open to candidates in the US and Canada. The role contributes to designing, building, operating, and maintaining critical systems, with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability. Engineers deliver features, drive projects from initial ideas through customer operations, contribute to open-source projects, improve services based on production experience, and collaborate on designs and code. The role also participates in a follow-the-sun on-call rotation. The engineering organization is fully remote and relies on regular video calls, independent work, and clear communication.

  • Pragmatic approach to complex challenges, including breaking work into manageable steps, delivering MVPs, gathering feedback, and iterating.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working in a fully remote team.
  • Solid experience with at least one programming language; Go is used, and familiarity with Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar languages is transferable.
  • Some experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and idea generation through product delivery in a self-directed way.
  • Some experience developing cloud software or in systems engineering.
  • Some experience with on-call work and the DevOps model.
  • Experience writing clean, robust, performant software that is maintainable by others.
  • Familiarity with observability systems and using metrics, logs, and traces to debug problems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Kubernetes.
  • Experience working with queue systems, such as the Kafka protocol.
  • Experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles, including on-call, or on hobby or homelab projects.
  • Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a desire to learn.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code.

Responsibilities

  • Influence the team roadmap and personal career objectives.
  • Work with the team to deliver features and iterate based on results.
  • Drive projects from initial idea through operation in customers’ hands.
  • Contribute to open-source projects, including projects outside the team’s direct scope.
  • Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, owning their reliability, performance, and availability.
  • Participate in the team’s follow-the-sun on-call rotation and take ownership of services.
  • Support team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate with the team.
  • Learn the cloud product, understand customers, and become familiar with the codebase of a large distributed system.

  • Bonus, if applicable.
  • Global annual leave policy of 30 days per annum, with 3 days reserved for Grafana Shutdown Days, subject to local legislation.
