About The Position

The Senior AWS Cloud Engineer will build and own Vela’s cloud foundation in AWS GovCloud (US), where CUI and manufacturing data will reside. This hands-on role will establish the landing zone, infrastructure-as-code standards, and secure data architecture connecting manufacturing operations to analytics. The engineer will help build the cloud environment that supports Vaylent and its operating companies as the platform grows. The position operates within a precision manufacturing environment supporting production of mission-critical aerospace and defense components. It requires coordination across departments to support manufacturing operations and customer delivery commitments, as well as the ability to work onsite and outside normal working hours when needed to meet critical deadlines.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of cloud engineering experience with deep hands-on AWS experience.
  • Strong AWS networking skills, including VPC, Transit Gateway, and hybrid connectivity using Direct Connect or VPN.
  • Strong infrastructure-as-code skills using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools, and experience with CI/CD and Git-based automation.
  • Experience designing secure AWS data pipelines or data lakes using services and capabilities such as S3, IAM, KMS, VPC, and networking.
  • Familiarity with CMMC, NIST SP 800-171, or FedRAMP control expectations in a cloud context, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to operate independently in an early-stage environment and document work for a growing team.
  • Ability to work onsite, including hours outside a normal working day, to meet critical deadlines.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment, including walking the production floor, climbing stairs or ladders, occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds, and wearing required PPE.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by ITAR.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
  • Self-motivated and directed, detail-oriented, able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment, and able to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of direct AWS GovCloud (US) experience or experience in another accredited or regulated cloud.
  • Industrial IoT or edge experience, such as AWS IoT Greengrass, SiteWise, Azure IoT, or similar OT data-ingestion technologies.
  • Manufacturing or defense-sector cloud experience.
  • AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect, DevOps, or Security.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Experience integrating acquired companies onto a common cloud platform.
  • Familiarity with CMMC, NIST SP 800-171, or FedRAMP control expectations in a cloud context.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build AWS GovCloud (US) landing zones, including accounts, networking, identity, guardrails, and logging aligned with FedRAMP High and CMMC Level 2 expectations.
  • Establish version-controlled, repeatable, and auditable infrastructure-as-code standards using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools.
  • Build secure data architecture, including shop-floor ingestion through industrial IoT or edge connectivity, a CUI-tiered data lake, and downstream analytics.
  • Set up secure access using bastion or jump hosts, private connectivity, and least-privilege access patterns.
  • Implement FIPS-validated encryption in transit and at rest, KMS key management, immutable logging, and boundary controls.
  • Own cloud networking, including VPC design, Transit Gateway, and Direct Connect or VPN connectivity to on-premises sites, in partnership with the network engineer.
  • Establish CI/CD pipelines and Git-based workflows to automate infrastructure and deployments.
  • Own operational health, including monitoring, logging, observability, cost visibility, and cost optimization.
  • Partner on M&A integration by integrating acquired companies’ data and systems into the platform using repeatable patterns.
  • Maintain cloud security, access controls, encryption, audit readiness, availability, operational resilience, and accurate architecture, security, and operational documentation.
  • Optimize cloud infrastructure for security, scalability, performance, and cost.
  • Work onsite in a manufacturing environment and coordinate across departments as needed to support production and customer commitments.
  • Follow applicable manufacturing safety practices, including use of required personal protective equipment.
