About The Position

SMS group Inc. seeks Senior Automation Engineer - Level 1 Systems to work in Pittsburgh, PA, to deliver best in class automated systems for metals production, which enable the metals industry to produce green steel. This role must know the process and plan out the structure and functions of the software, then create, develop, and test the software, as well as provide commissioning and operational support to our customers. This role also uses knowledge of metals production to improve the reliability and efficiency of the process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a directly related field of study
  • At least five (5) years of experience in a related role designing and commissioning automated control systems in the metals industry
  • At least five (5) years of experience using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) in automated systems
  • Applying engineering principles to the solution of automated system design problems
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and relating them to wiring installed in cabinets or other industrial equipment
  • Performing cold commissioning of automated systems
  • Performing hot commissioning of automated systems

Responsibilities

  • Determine software requirements by reviewing the as-sold specification to drive development activities, and to check for accuracy
  • Review functional descriptions (if available) to learn the customer’s expectations of the machines capabilities and requirements, and discover inconsistencies with customer expectations and actual capabilities
  • Collaborate with E&A Manager to create project task list that includes areas, assignments and deadlines
  • Plan software structure by referencing the technical description to determine the most efficient code organization
  • Develop well documented PLC software according to PLC standards and software plan
  • Program interfaces for any package units, level 2 systems, and HMIs
  • Create simulation code and test software according to functional descriptions, process knowledge, and Factory Test Plan
  • Conduct factory acceptance tests based on established protocol to determine equipment functions according to design
  • Conduct point to point test of I/O panels using PLC or test equipment to determine wiring is correct
  • Redline drawings to document any issues or changes
  • Perform Cold and Hot Commissioning
  • Perform I/O checkout and single function tests
  • Run Simulated testing on the equipment
  • Assist and support first operation of new equipment
  • Resolve any issues that arise after startup
