Senior Architect, Cloud Platform

Abbott Laboratories•Alameda, CA
•$114,000 - $228,000

About The Position

At Lingo, Abbott is building a health platform that combines continuous biosensor data, real-time analytics, and personalized insights. The platform ingests millions of sensor readings daily and supports consumers and partners through reliable, scalable, cloud-native systems. The Senior Architect, Cloud Platform owns the architecture of Lingo’s cloud SaaS platform, which connects with mobile applications to receive biosensor and user data, securely stores that data at scale, and exposes APIs and services for personalized insights. The role also defines how the platform connects to AI services, including the interfaces, data flows, and safeguards needed to incorporate machine learning and generative AI responsibly and reliably. This is a hands-on senior individual-contributor position. The architect sets technical direction, leads design reviews, builds proofs of concept, and mentors engineers. They work closely with engineering leaders, product managers, and mobile, data, and AI teams to ensure the platform is secure, scalable, and ready for future needs. The role can be based in Alameda, California.

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including 5+ years in an architect, principal, or technical lead role for large-scale cloud or SaaS platforms.
  • Proven experience architecting cloud-native backends serving mobile applications at consumer scale.
  • Deep expertise in distributed systems, microservices, event-driven architectures, and API design such as REST, GraphQL, or gRPC.
  • Strong production-scale experience with Azure cloud services or equivalent, including services such as App Service, AKS, Azure Functions, Cosmos DB, Azure SQL, Event Hubs, and API Management.
  • Experience designing data storage and processing for high-volume or time-series data.
  • Experience integrating ML models or AI services into production systems, including serving, monitoring, and reliability considerations.
  • Experience designing systems that handle sensitive data under HIPAA, PHI, GDPR, or similar privacy frameworks.
  • Hands-on ability to prototype, review code, and engage deeply in technical detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building partner ecosystems in digital health, wearables, IoT, fitness, or consumer health technology.
  • Familiarity with health data standards and platforms such as FHIR, HL7, Apple HealthKit, and Google Health Connect.
  • Experience with consent management platforms and privacy-by-design practices.
  • Experience with event streaming technologies such as Kafka or Azure Event Hubs and API management tooling.

  • Define architecture principles, reference designs, and standards for services, APIs, data, and infrastructure.
  • Lead architecture and design reviews, document key decisions such as architecture decision records, and manage visibility into technical debt and trade-offs.
  • Assess the current platform, identify scalability, reliability, and cost risks, and drive a pragmatic evolution plan as users and product scope grow.
  • Architect services connecting Lingo’s iOS and Android applications to the cloud, including device data synchronization, offline handling, and efficient, secure data upload.
  • Design high-throughput ingestion pipelines for continuous biosensor and user-generated data, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely processing.
  • Define backend-for-frontend patterns, API contracts, and versioning strategies that support independent mobile and cloud team development without breaking users.
  • Design data storage architecture for time-series biosensor data, user profiles, and derived insights, selecting suitable relational, NoSQL, and analytical stores.
  • Define data models, retention, partitioning, and lifecycle policies that balance performance, cost, and privacy obligations.
  • Architect secure, performant APIs for in-app experiences, internal services, and platform capabilities, including standards for authentication, authorization, and rate limiting.
  • Partner with Data Engineering to ensure clean data flows into analytics and data platforms with appropriate lineage and governance.
  • Set architecture direction, build proofs of concept, and mentor engineers while engaging in hands-on technical work.
