Senior Applied Scientist - CoreAI (Speech and Translation)

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $304,200

About The Position

The Core AI Speech Group combines expertise in signal processing, speech modeling, statistical modeling, and deep learning to develop robust, natural, and scalable speech technologies across scenarios and languages. The team industrializes deep-learning speech technologies and contributes innovations to the speech community, developing end-to-end speech technologies and algorithms for challenging problems. The Senior Applied Scientist will advance state-of-the-art speech modeling technologies that affect millions of users, with a focus on real-world scenarios and integrating speech with large language models for multimodal modeling. The role involves developing and applying algorithms to products, evaluating model performance through production experiments and iterative testing, and monitoring models against expected behaviors and performance or accuracy guardrails. The scientist also works with large-scale computing frameworks, data analysis systems, and modeling environments, and helps address scalability challenges in response to stakeholder needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field, plus 4 or more years of related experience; or a master's degree in one of these fields plus 3 or more years of related experience; or a doctorate in one of these fields plus 1 or more years of related experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of experience presenting as an invited speaker at conferences such as ASRU, ICASSP, Interspeech, or other research or industry events.
  • At least 1 year of experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle, from ideation to shipping.
  • At least 1 year of experience developing and deploying live production systems as part of a product team.
  • At least 3 years of experience conducting research as part of an academic or industry research program.
  • Experience presenting as an invited speaker at conferences or other events in the outside research or industry community.
  • At least 3 years of experience creating publications, such as patents, libraries, or peer-reviewed academic papers.
  • Master's degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field, plus 6 or more years of related experience; or a doctorate in one of these fields plus 3 or more years of related experience; or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop novel speech algorithms to advance state-of-the-art speech technologies for real-world user scenarios, especially by integrating speech with LLMs for multimodal modeling.
  • Help address scalability problems by adjusting to stakeholder needs.
  • Work with large-scale computing frameworks, data analysis systems, and modeling environments to improve models.
  • Apply models to real products and verify their effects through iterations.
  • Put multiple models into production and evaluate their performance.
  • Monitor algorithms against expected behaviors and performance or accuracy guardrails.

Benefits
