Senior Applied Scientist - CoreAI (Speech and Translation)

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $304,200

About The Position

The Senior Applied Scientist will join Microsoft's Core AI Speech Group, a science team working across signal processing, speech modeling, statistical modeling, and deep learning to develop robust, natural, and scalable speech technologies for diverse scenarios and languages. The team industrializes deep learning speech technologies and contributes innovations to the speech community, developing end-to-end speech technologies for challenging problems. The role focuses on innovating state-of-the-art speech modeling technologies that reach millions of users. It includes developing novel speech algorithms for real-world scenarios, especially integrating speech with large language models for multimodal modeling, and bringing models into products through deployment, evaluation, and iterative monitoring.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field and 4+ years of related experience, such as statistics, predictive analytics, or research; or a master's degree in one of these fields and 3+ years of related experience; or a doctorate in one of these fields and 1+ year of related experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of experience presenting at conferences such as ASRU, ICASSP, Interspeech, or other research or industry events as an invited speaker.
  • 1+ year of experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle, from ideation to shipping.
  • 1+ year of experience developing and deploying live production systems as part of a product team.
  • 3+ years of experience conducting research as part of an academic or industry research program.
  • Experience presenting at conferences or other outside research or industry events as an invited speaker.
  • 3+ years of experience creating publications, such as patents, libraries, or peer-reviewed academic papers.
  • Master's degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field and 6+ years of related experience; or a doctorate in one of these fields and 3+ years of related experience; or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop novel speech algorithms to advance state-of-the-art speech technologies for real-world user scenarios, especially by integrating speech with LLMs for multimodal modeling.
  • Address scalability problems by adjusting to stakeholder needs.
  • Work with large-scale computing frameworks, data analysis systems, and modeling environments to improve models.
  • Apply models to real products and verify their effects through iterations.
  • Experiment by putting multiple models into production and evaluating their performance.
  • Monitor algorithm performance against expected behaviors and performance or accuracy guardrails.

Benefits

  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation; additional benefits and pay information is provided at the linked Microsoft careers page.
