Senior Analytics Engineer

Mercer Advisors
•$140,250 - $165,000

About The Position

The Senior Analytics Engineer helps Mercer Advisors build a modern, trusted data foundation for wealth advisors, client service teams, and firm leaders. Reporting to the VP, Client Data & Analytics, this hands-on senior role co-designs and co-owns the transformation and semantic layers that turn raw platform data into governed, well-tested, documented datasets and metrics. The role supports both served and self-service analytics, enabling analysts and business users—including users of AI-enabled tools—to find and use trustworthy data. It applies software engineering practices to analytics work and helps set team standards while mentoring colleagues and partnering with business and technology stakeholders. The role designs and maintains dbt models on Microsoft Fabric, co-owns Power BI semantic models and shared metrics, and establishes data quality, testing, monitoring, and deployment practices. It works with business partners to translate questions into reliable data models, documents datasets and lineage, optimizes performance and cost, and supports appropriate privacy, access controls, and auditability. The position also reviews colleagues’ work, evaluates tooling and architecture improvements, and troubleshoots data issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, data science, statistics, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Five or more years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or business intelligence development, with a track record of delivering production data models used across a business.
  • Advanced SQL skills, including query optimization and dimensional modeling (facts, dimensions, and slowly changing dimensions).
  • Production experience with dbt, including modular model design, testing, documentation, macros, incremental models, and deployment practices.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse or Warehouse, Data Factory or pipelines, OneLake) or a comparable cloud data platform such as Snowflake, Databricks, or BigQuery.
  • Strong Power BI experience, including semantic model design, DAX, row-level security, and shared dataset governance; familiarity with a metrics or semantic-layer approach.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled analytics tools and the data-layer requirements for reliable answers, including governed metrics, clear definitions, and good documentation.
  • Working knowledge of Git, pull request workflows, and CI/CD pipelines, such as Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
  • Proficiency in Python for scripting, automation, and data validation.
  • Experience establishing data quality, testing, and observability practices, and a clear point of view on how to scale them.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous business needs into clear technical designs and explain tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders and executives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative, ownership-minded approach to working with analysts, engineers, and business partners.
  • Understanding of data privacy, security, and governance principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with sensitive or regulated data.
  • Experience in wealth management, financial services, or another regulated industry.

  • Co-own the Power BI semantic layer, including certified semantic models, shared measures, and row-level security.
  • Establish data quality standards through dbt tests, source freshness checks, data contracts, monitoring, and alerting.
  • Maintain software engineering practices for analytics, including Git workflows, pull request reviews, automated CI/CD, and separate development, test, and production environments.
  • Partner with wealth advisors, client service teams, finance, operations, and technology to translate business questions into reliable models and metric definitions and retire duplicative or conflicting reporting.
  • Document models, metrics, and lineage; maintain business definitions and a catalog of certified datasets and their owners.
  • Optimize transformation and semantic model performance and cost through incremental loading, partitioning, and query design.
  • Work with Information Security, Compliance, and Technology teams to apply access controls, privacy protections, and auditability in accordance with company policies and regulatory expectations.
  • Review team members’ work and mentor analysts and engineers on modeling and engineering practices.
  • Contribute to team standards, templates, and onboarding materials.
