Senior Analytics Engineer

Instructure, Inc.•,
•$145,000 - $155,000

About The Position

Instructure is hiring a Senior Analytics Engineer to build and maintain data models that teams use to run the business. The role works extensively with dbt and Snowflake and partners directly with business leaders to understand their decisions and create accurate, useful data. It supports analytics across Finance, Operations, Product Management, Sales, and other functions, and owns models from source through dashboard while helping establish standards for data design, testing, and documentation. The position combines hands-on analytics engineering with business partnership. The engineer translates business questions into data requirements, builds and tunes dimensional models, maintains the full model lifecycle, and communicates data definitions and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences. The role also reviews code, mentors colleagues, and improves modeling practices across the team.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or a similar role.
  • Deep hands-on experience with dbt, including macros, packages, incremental models, snapshots, and testing.
  • Strong Snowflake skills, advanced SQL, and understanding of performance and cost.
  • Proven experience designing dimensional models, including star schemas, facts, dimensions, and conformed dimensions, with judgment about when to use them.
  • Solid data architecture instincts, including layered modeling, grain, lineage, data contracts, and maintainable project structure.
  • Working knowledge of business operations across functions such as finance, sales, operations, and product; SaaS experience is relevant.
  • Ability to discuss business issues credibly with directors, VPs, and executives and translate those discussions into data solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including documenting work and explaining it clearly.
  • Experience with Git-based workflows and CI/CD for data projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, or another quantitative field.
  • Experience modeling data from CRM and other business systems such as Salesforce.
  • Familiarity with orchestration tools such as Airflow or dbt Cloud.
  • Experience with a BI tool such as Tableau, Looker, or Power BI.
  • Background in a SaaS or education technology company.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain dimensional models in dbt and Snowflake for reporting and analysis across Finance, Operations, Product Management, and other business functions.
  • Work directly with senior leaders to translate business questions into clear data requirements.
  • Own the model lifecycle, including source ingestion patterns, staging, intermediate and mart layers, tests, documentation, and deployment.
  • Set and enforce modeling standards for naming conventions, grain definitions, slowly changing dimensions, and testing practices.
  • Tune Snowflake performance and cost through materialization choices, clustering, and warehouse sizing.
  • Partner with data engineers and business systems teams to ensure upstream data is suitable for modeling.
  • Review pull requests, mentor analysts and engineers, and raise the quality bar across the team.
  • Explain data definitions and tradeoffs to non-technical audiences and push back on requests that could produce misleading metrics.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation.
  • Ownership program participation for all full-time employees.
  • Flexible work culture, with remote, hybrid, and in-office collaboration spaces varying by role, team, and location.
  • Generous time off, including local holidays and an annual late-December “Dim the Lights” period, based on departmental needs.
  • Comprehensive wellness programs and mental health support.
  • Learning and development resources, including professional development tools and tuition reimbursement.
  • Technology and tools needed to do the work.
  • Motivosity employee recognition program.
  • Inclusive culture focused on support and meaningful connection.
