Senior Analytics Engineer

The Honest Company•Minneapolis, MN
•$130,000 - $150,000

About The Position

The Honest Company is seeking a Senior Analytics Engineer to own one or more domains of its curated analytics layer end to end, from source contract through certified mart. The centralized data function uses Redshift, Airflow, dbt, Metabase, and Hex. Example domains include ERP orders, shipments, inventory, and cost, or Circana syndicated data, including cross-domain joins used in SIOP and forecast-accuracy reporting. The role serves as the domain authority for stakeholders, framing ambiguous requests, resolving disputed metrics, deciding how data should be modeled, and raising the quality of work across analysts and engineers. The engineer will define dataset tiers and service-level expectations, own model runtime and Redshift costs, coordinate schema and quality expectations with Data Engineering, lead migration from spreadsheets and raw tables to curated models, and shape the domain backlog with the Senior Manager. The position also includes mentoring, interviewing, and leading reliability practices and incident follow-through. Within 12 months, the domain’s reporting is expected to run on curated models rather than spreadsheets of record; critical datasets should meet their SLAs, with incidents resolved at their cause; stakeholders should bring metric-definition questions to the role; and at least one other engineer or analyst should be able to ship work in the domain to standard without review.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years in analytics engineering, data engineering, or a heavily technical analyst role, including at least 2 years owning production models relied on by other teams.
  • Expert SQL skills on a columnar warehouse.
  • Production dbt experience, including tests, macros, snapshots, exposures, and CI.
  • Dimensional modeling across multiple sources.
  • Ability to demonstrate a modeling decision, the alternatives considered, and the reasoning for the decision.
  • Experience resolving a metric-definition disagreement between teams and making the resolution stick.
  • Experience owning reliability for datasets with real consumers, including tests, freshness, alerting, and incident follow-through.
  • Clear technical writing, including design documents, pull request descriptions, and documentation understandable to business users.
  • Evidence of improving others’ work through mentorship, review culture, or standards adoption.

Nice To Haves

  • CPG, retail, or consumer goods experience, especially syndicated measurement data such as Circana/IRI, NIQ, or SPINS, or retailer vendor portals.
  • Working knowledge of the SIOP/S&OP cycle or finance close calendar and how data timing affects them.
  • Experience with a semantic layer, metric store, or data observability platform such as Monte Carlo or Datafold.
  • Python experience and exposure to Airflow, Fivetran, or dlt.

Responsibilities

  • Own one or more data domains end to end, from source contract to certified mart.
  • Write design documents for domain-scale changes and obtain review before implementation.
  • Run metric-definition sessions with supply chain planners and finance analysts, document agreements, and bring unresolved conflicts to the Data Council with a recommendation.
  • Define dataset tiers and SLAs for the domain; lead incident response and post-incident reviews when datasets fail.
  • Own runtime performance and Redshift costs for domain models, identifying and fixing expensive models.
  • Agree on source schema and quality expectations with Data Engineering and protect those expectations when upstream changes could cause breakage.
  • Shape the domain backlog with the Senior Manager, declining work when appropriate and explaining reasons and alternatives.
  • Mentor analytics engineers and analysts, using code reviews to teach the reasoning behind standards.
  • Lead migration of domain reporting from spreadsheets and raw tables to curated models.
  • Run interview rounds and help calibrate candidates.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Monthly fitness reimbursement and, for employees in the Playa Vista office, an onsite gym.
  • Generous and flexible vacation policy.
  • Maternity and paternity leave.
  • Equity granted to every full-time employee.
  • Education reimbursement.
  • Pet insurance.
  • The total rewards package may also include an annual incentive plan, benefits, retirement plan, equity, and Employee Stock Purchase Plan; offerings may vary by position and geographic location.
