About The Position

The Ministry of Energy and Minerals is responsible for sustaining the interests of Albertans through the stewardship and responsible development of energy and mineral resource and pore space systems. The Ministry Services Division provides enterprise-wide support services for the Department of Energy and Minerals and ensures alignment with and adherence to related Government of Alberta policies. The Finance and Administration Branch provides financial operations, planning, reporting, procurement and quality assurance services. The Financial Operations and Systems unit provides accounts payable, cash receipts, procurement, and systems support (i.e. CARS2, PowerBI, etc). The Petrinex Branch is seeking a Senior Analyst for a temporary position within the Financial Operations unit. This role supports financial reporting, data analytics, and system integrity, contributing to informed decision-making and policy development across the department and the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission (APMC). Reporting to the Director, Financial Operations, this senior-level position operates with a high degree of autonomy and accountability. The successful candidate will take on leadership responsibilities such as setting priorities, reviewing work, and guiding deliverables, while working collaboratively with stakeholders, program areas, and technical professionals to deliver data-driven solutions that support business operations and strategic initiatives. This position plays a critical role in financial reporting, data management, system governance, and advanced analytics, while also supporting major initiatives such as Bitumen Royalty In Kind (BRIK) and Gas Royalty In Kind (GRIK).

Requirements

  • University graduation in a Data Analytics, Finance, Accounting, Business Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, or Economics or related field supplemented by four (4) years of related experience in data analytics and visualization and financial reporting.
  • Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and delivery of financial and operational reports using data from multiple systems.
  • Design and deliver dashboards, data models, and advanced analytics (e.g., Power BI, Excel, Power Query, DAX) to support decision-making and trend analysis.
  • Provide production support by managing system controls, job schedules, and resolving issues to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
  • Conduct business analysis and collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into technical reporting and data solutions.
  • Support data management and governance by improving data quality, documentation, and overall data practices.
  • Lead and support implementation activities for key initiatives, including system updates, testing, process mapping, and financial controls design.
  • Deliver training and provide subject matter expertise on reporting tools, data structures, and financial systems.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, policies, and audit requirements.
  • Provide expert advice and contribute to financial operations, reporting frameworks, and continuous improvement initiatives.
