Senior Algorithm Solutions Engineer

STR•Arlington, VA
•$138,000 - $170,000

About The Position

STR’s Intelligence division researches and develops advanced analytics and machine learning-based solutions for challenging national security problems. Its engineers apply deep technical knowledge and creativity across data modalities, using approaches such as reinforcement agent policy learning, transformer-based information distillation, and AI/ML computer vision. These algorithms are designed to operate under constraints beyond those typically encountered in commercial settings and support the intelligence community. In this role, the engineer will use software development and machine learning skills to develop, implement, and evaluate AI/ML algorithms that extract meaning from large or challenging datasets deployed in cloud and edge environments. The role supports fast-moving research groups and the transition of promising solutions into real-world applications, including video-based object reidentification, foundation models for overhead imagery, and automatic target recognition in complex imagery. The position is based in Arlington, Virginia; Woburn, Massachusetts; or Dayton, Ohio.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or Physics, with 5 or more years of relevant experience; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and demonstrated ability to produce clean, high-quality code with and without coding tools.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices, including Git version control and Agile workflow methodologies.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. government.
  • Collaborative approach, ownership throughout the development lifecycle, and pride in solution craftsmanship.
  • Excellent communication and briefing skills, including comfort communicating with technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of machine learning methods and implementation, such as vision transformers, self-supervised or semi-self-supervised foundation-model use and fine-tuning, vision-language models applied to agentic training, or large-scale object reassociation in video or sparse revisit imagery.
  • Experience leading and directing research initiatives from inception to functional prototypes.
  • Experience working on a large, cross-functional, distributed team.
  • Experience with U.S. Government software accreditation processes.
  • Active security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize algorithm solutions across computer vision, 3D modeling, multimodal sensor-data fusion, and open-set recognition and identification in imagery.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams, transition-focused engineers, and academic partners to deliver impact.
  • Support software solutions deployed across cloud and edge-capable devices and environments using developed algorithms.
  • Implement and evaluate novel prototype solutions and work with a team to mature promising prototypes into operational capabilities.
