Algorithm Engineer

SRC•Fairborn, OH

About The Position

SRC, Inc. is seeking an early-career Algorithm Engineer to support development of radar and sensor processing algorithms for defense and national security applications. The engineer will work under the direction of senior engineers and scientists to implement, test, and analyze signal processing and estimation algorithms using recorded data from real systems. The work involves understanding sensor measurements, extracting useful information, and evaluating algorithm performance. The role brings together applied mathematics, physics, and software engineering, and is distinct from machine learning engineering, although the teams work closely together. The position is based in Fairborn, Ohio, and is full-time, salaried, with 10% travel. Applicants must meet security clearance eligibility requirements. SRC is a not-for-profit research and development company working in defense, environment, and intelligence. The company describes its work environment as highly innovative, inclusive, and equitable and says employees collaborate with more than 1,400 engineers, scientists, and professionals. The anticipated salary range for this position based out of Dayton, Ohio, is $70,000 to $88,000 annually. Actual salary may vary based on experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and business and organizational needs. Benefits include four or more weeks of paid time off to start, a 10% employer contribution toward retirement, and 100% tuition support; SRC also offers competitive benefit options.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Zero or more years of experience; internships, co-ops, research assistantships, and substantial academic project work count.
  • Solid foundation in linear algebra, probability and statistics, and Fourier analysis.
  • Coursework or project experience in digital signal processing, including sampling, filtering, spectral estimation, and the FFT.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python with NumPy and SciPy.
  • Ability to reason quantitatively about physical systems and sanity-check results against physical constraints.
  • Clear technical writing and the ability to present analysis so that others can follow the reasoning.
  • Must meet security clearance eligibility requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or research in radar systems, remote sensing, communications, or electromagnetics.
  • Familiarity with detection and estimation theory, including likelihood ratio tests, CFAR detection, maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimation, and Cramér-Rao bounds.
  • Exposure to Kalman filtering, target tracking, or sensor fusion.
  • Experience with SAR, ISAR, or other coherent imaging.
  • Programming in C/C++ or exposure to GPU acceleration (CUDA, CuPy) or FPGA/DSP implementation.
  • Experience working with large recorded datasets and practical issues involving I/O, memory, and vectorization.
  • Familiarity with software-defined radio hardware or RF test equipment.
  • Exposure to applying machine learning methods to signal or RF data.
  • Master’s degree in a related technical discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and test signal processing algorithms, including matched filtering, pulse compression, Doppler processing, beamforming, and detection processing.
  • Analyze recorded sensor data to characterize system behavior, identify artifacts and interference, and validate algorithm performance against theoretical predictions.
  • Develop and run modeling and simulation to generate synthetic data, verify algorithm behavior under controlled conditions, and support Monte Carlo performance analysis.
  • Build analysis tools and visualizations to make complex multidimensional data interpretable to engineers and customers.
  • Compare algorithm performance with theoretical bounds and alternative approaches using metrics such as ROC curves, detection and false alarm rates, and estimation error statistics.
  • Assist with translating algorithms from prototype environments into production or real-time implementations.
  • Gather and correlate data and perform routine analysis in support of larger program objectives.
  • Contribute data, figures, and findings to technical reports, test documentation, and presentations.

Benefits

  • Four or more weeks of paid time off to start.
  • 10% employer contribution toward retirement.
  • 100% tuition support.
  • Competitive benefit options.
