Senior Algorithm Engineer

SRC, Inc•Fairborn, OH
•$100,000 - $116,000

About The Position

SRC, Inc. is seeking a Senior Algorithm Engineer to lead development of radar, RF, and multi-sensor processing algorithms supporting ISR, EW, and advanced sensing missions. The role involves applying sensor physics and mathematics to develop processing methods that extract information from measurements and demonstrating performance with evidence suitable for customers. The engineer will lead moderate-scope algorithm development tasks, identify technical approaches to problems without off-the-shelf solutions, guide less experienced engineers, and contribute to proposals and customer engagements. Work spans detection and estimation theory, adaptive signal processing, coherent imaging, tracking and fusion, and the combination of learned and model-based methods. Candidates should have theoretical depth and experience applying algorithms to real recorded data. The role includes development, analysis, validation, modeling, and performance characterization of radar and sensor-processing algorithms. It also supports transition from prototypes to real-time and embedded implementations, including analysis of fixed-point effects, latency, throughput, and processing budgets. The engineer will exercise independent technical judgment and communicate technical tradeoffs to program leadership. SRC is a not-for-profit research and development company working in defense, environment, and intelligence. The company describes its work as helping keep America and its allies safe and strong, and reports having more than 1,400 engineers, scientists, and professionals. The position is based out of Dayton, Ohio. The anticipated annual salary range is $100,000 to $116,000, with actual compensation dependent on experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and business and organizational needs. SRC describes its benefits package as including four or more weeks of paid time off to start, a 10 percent employer retirement contribution, and 100 percent tuition support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical discipline and 4 or more years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree and 2 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Strong command of detection and estimation theory, stochastic processes, linear algebra, and statistical signal processing.
  • Demonstrated experience developing radar, RF, or comparable sensor-processing algorithms and validating them against real recorded data.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Python, including NumPy and SciPy, for algorithm development and analysis.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation, including Monte Carlo methods and performance prediction.
  • Ability to derive an approach from first principles when existing methods are not suitable, and to recognize when an existing method is appropriate.
  • Experience guiding or mentoring less experienced technical staff.
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to present complex analysis to technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep experience in one or more of STAP, adaptive or digital beamforming, SAR/ISAR image formation (back-projection, polar format, or autofocus), MTI and clutter cancellation, passive or bistatic radar, or electronic warfare techniques.
  • Experience with cognitive and adaptive radar concepts, including resource management and closed-loop waveform adaptation.
  • Multi-sensor and multi-INT fusion experience.
  • Implementation experience in C/C++ with GPU acceleration (CUDA) or embedded/FPGA targets, including HLS workflows and fixed-point analysis.
  • Experience applying machine learning to RF and radar problems, such as RF machine learning, learned detection or classification, model-based deep learning and algorithm unrolling, or ML-assisted parameter estimation.
  • Familiarity with digital twins and high-fidelity scene or phenomenology simulation.
  • Experience with field testing, collection planning, and practical instrumented-data collection.
  • Familiarity with DoD mission domains, customer communities, and technology transition pathways.
  • Publications or patents in radar signal processing or a related field.
  • Active DoD security clearance.
  • MS or PhD in a related technical discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Support and potentially lead development, analysis, and validation of moderate-scope radar and sensor-processing algorithms, from mathematical formulation through implementation and performance characterization.
  • Identify technical problems and shortfalls in existing processing chains and define approaches to address them.
  • Develop and apply advanced techniques such as adaptive beamforming, space-time adaptive processing, clutter suppression, waveform design and optimization, interference mitigation, and coherent imaging.
  • Analyze complex recorded data to characterize phenomenology, diagnose anomalies, and compare achievable performance with theoretical predictions.
  • Build and maintain high-fidelity modeling and simulation for algorithm development, trade studies, and Monte Carlo performance prediction.
  • Define performance metrics and test methodologies, and produce defensible algorithm-performance analyses, including sensitivity to environment, geometry, and system parameters.
  • Support transition of algorithms from prototype to real-time and embedded implementations in collaboration with software and hardware engineers, considering fixed-point effects, latency, throughput, and processing budgets.
  • Evaluate the value of learned methods relative to model-based processing and integrate them when supported by evidence.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and develop their analytical judgment.
  • Contribute to proposals and white papers and help present technical findings and recommendations to customers.
  • Exercise independent technical judgment in selecting approaches and communicate tradeoffs clearly to program leadership.

Benefits

  • Four or more weeks of paid time off to start.
  • 10 percent employer contribution toward retirement.
  • 100 percent tuition support.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
