The Bay Area Air District (Air District) is a regional government agency, committed to achieving clean air to protect the public's health and the environment. The Air District accomplishes this goal through regulation of industrial facilities and various outreach and incentive programs designed to encourage clean air choices. The Air District's jurisdiction encompasses all of seven counties - Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Napa, and portions of two others - southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma. The Air District is currently accepting applications for the position of Senior Air Quality Engineer in the Assessment, Inventory & Modeling Division (AIM). This is an open recruitment for one (1) full-time, represented position. About the Position The Senior Air Quality Engineer will be assigned to the Emissions and Community Exposure Assessment Section within the AIM Division. This position provides technical leadership to ensure the Air District's emissions reporting for permitted facilities and complex area source categories is accurate, compliant with regulatory requirements, and aligned with evolving state standards. Key responsibilities include: Developing emissions estimates for complex area source categories and annual emissions reporting for permitted facilities. Designing, reviewing, and enhancing SQL and R scripts to improve data processing, automate quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), and streamline database workflows. Integrating emissions estimates into local and regional air quality modeling systems to support emissions and air quality analysis. The Senior Air Quality Engineer will support the full lifecycle of emissions data management, including modernizing data processing workflows, strengthening automated QA/QC systems, improving SQL- and R-based data pipelines, and developing data visualization tools using Power BI and other software platforms. This position will also help improve data management systems to reduce reporting errors, eliminate redundant processes, and support the integration of emissions inventories into modeling frameworks. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional with strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and demonstrated expertise in SQL and R programming. Experience with emissions inventory development, data management, and automation is highly desirable.
