About The Position

Next Chapter Technology (NCT), a Banyan Software operating company, builds CaseWorks, a content and workflow management platform used in county-level Health and Human Services operations across the United States. NCT is seeking a Senior AI Architect to lead its transition into an AI-first platform. This is a hands-on builder-to-leader role focused on personally designing, building, and proving foundational AI capabilities before expanding the team. After establishing the AI factory framework, the role will include managing and upskilling the engineering team to adopt modern workflows. The successful candidate will modernize a 15-year-old Microsoft-stack platform pragmatically, delivering customer value without undertaking a wholesale rewrite. The position partners closely with the CEO and Banyan’s centralized AI initiatives, and requires safe execution within government-adjacent and public-sector compliance frameworks, including HIPAA and CJIS. The role is US-based and remote, subject to eligibility for government-adjacent compliance work.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a track record of modernizing complex architectures and establishing cloud-native and DevSecOps practices.
  • Documented experience shipping functional AI/ML systems end-to-end to real users, including data pipelines, modeling, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Comfort independently delivering baseline architecture before relying on a larger team; experience as a founding or first AI engineer is relevant.
  • Strong judgment in build-versus-buy decisions and patience to guide a 15-year-old Microsoft-stack platform through modernization.
  • Strong commercial acumen, an exploratory mindset, coachability, humility, and clear-eyed self-awareness.
  • Must be based in the United States and fully eligible for government-adjacent/public-sector compliance work.
  • Willingness to remain directly involved in day-to-day technical execution.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct GovTech, public-sector, or federal case management software experience.
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft AI stack, including Azure ML and Azure OpenAI integrations.
  • Experience managing, coordinating, or collaborating with distributed/offshore engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Personally design and build foundational AI capabilities, including RAG systems, code generation, LLM orchestration, and multi-agent workflows, to analyze legacy code and generate production-ready services.
  • Refactor legacy components into scalable, cloud-native services and replace manual workflows with AI-driven automation while avoiding a wholesale platform rewrite.
  • Deploy features safely using approaches such as feature flags, shadow mode, and monitoring, while operating within HIPAA, CJIS, and other applicable government-adjacent and public-sector compliance frameworks.
  • Serve as the core technical partner to the CEO and collaborate with Banyan’s centralized AI initiatives to accelerate product value.
  • After establishing the AI factory framework, manage and upskill the engineering team to adopt modern workflows.
  • Build an AI-assisted development model and put it into production use.
  • Ship an initial wave of high-value AI features inside CaseWorks.
  • Improve engineering delivery speed and cadence in a measurable and predictable way.
  • Systematically modernize core legacy components into scalable cloud services.

Benefits

  • Long-term ownership and investment in architectural health without an arbitrary 3-to-5-year exit timeline.
  • Autonomy over AI strategy, tool choices, and engineering execution, with the financial stability and shared expertise of a global network.
  • Access to a peer community of Banyan operating company leaders sharing playbooks, lessons, and technology modernization experience.
