Senior Advanced Manufacturing Manager

Formlabs•Somerville, MA
•$120,000 - $225,000•Onsite

About The Position

Formlabs is hiring a Senior Advanced Manufacturing Manager for its global headquarters team in Boston. This is a hands-on engineering leadership role focused on supporting global manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams, sustaining manufacturing lines at contract manufacturers, and transitioning new hardware products into production. It differs from a typical shop-floor manufacturing engineering management role at a manufacturing plant. The manager leads manufacturing engineering professionals and drives manufacturing readiness, process control, reliability, quality, yield, and production capacity. The role works across new product introduction (NPI), design, supplier, and sustaining engineering teams to resolve production issues, improve producibility and cost effectiveness, and move products from prototype through mass production. The position is onsite in a fast-paced environment and includes occasional coordination with colleagues in different time zones during late evening local hours, as well as periodic travel to vendors, suppliers, and production facilities, mostly in China. The annual base pay range is $120,000–$225,000 USD. Formlabs states that employees receive equity, which is a significant portion of total compensation. Base pay depends on skills, qualifications, experience, location, and expected impact.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, such as mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace, or industrial engineering, or a related/equivalent field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in an engineering management or engineering team leadership role.
  • At least 5 years of technical experience, preferably in manufacturing engineering for complex electromechanical product industrialization at scale.
  • Experience with remotely managed NPI and contract manufacturers, including transitioning high-accuracy products from prototype to mass production.
  • Expertise in production quality metrics, GD&T, and process and equipment qualification procedures.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis methods such as DOE, comparison testing, and Gage R&R; structured problem-solving methods such as A3, 8D, DMAIC, and fault-tree analysis; and process control methods such as SPC and process capability (Cp/Cpk).
  • Willingness to work onsite in a fast-paced environment and occasionally coordinate with colleagues in different time zones during late evening local hours.
  • Willingness to travel to vendors, suppliers, and production facilities, mostly in China, approximately 10–20% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Proto, EVT, DVT, PVT, and MP product development processes and life cycles.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification, with the ability to apply and teach problem-solving and statistical methods.
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as JMP or Minitab and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or SQL.
  • Onshape or SolidWorks CAD modeling skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of manufacturing engineering professionals supporting global manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams.
  • Sustain manufacturing lines at contract manufacturers and support transitions into production.
  • Characterize process and product failures; conduct root-cause investigations and drive corrective actions and mistake-proofing at suppliers and contract manufacturers for new builds and refurbishments.
  • Own manufacturing process control and issue prevention for processes such as assembly, printer calibration, and verification testing; implement tools, equipment, and process methods to improve reliability, quality, and yield.
  • Drive team collaboration and provide player-coach support on complex engineering and operational challenges.
  • Own manufacturing technical readiness as a member of cross-functional NPI teams, emphasizing manufacturing return of experience, producibility, cost effectiveness, and industrialization.
  • Negotiate conflicting requirements, identify lessons learned and DFM/DFA/DFSS opportunities, and communicate or escalate them to upstream design and downstream sustaining engineers.
  • Manage manufacturing transitions and industrialization, including resolving first article inspection (FAI) and product or fixture assembly issues.
  • Drive manufacturing readiness maturity and secure mass-production capacity, throughput, yield, and process capability.
  • Travel periodically to vendors, suppliers, and production facilities, mostly in China.
