About The Position

Formlabs is seeking a Senior Advanced Manufacturing Manager for its global headquarters team in Boston. This is a manufacturing engineering leadership role focused on supporting global manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams, rather than a typical shop-floor role at a manufacturing plant. The manager will lead a team of manufacturing engineering professionals and support ongoing manufacturing-line sustainment at contract manufacturers, as well as transitions into production. The role owns manufacturing technical readiness and process control for new and existing products. It involves characterizing process and product failures, leading root-cause investigations and corrective actions, preventing issues, and establishing tools, equipment, and methods that support reliability, quality, and yield. As a player-coach and member of cross-functional NPI teams, the manager will guide manufacturing return of experience, producibility, cost effectiveness, industrialization, and the resolution of conflicting requirements. The manager will oversee manufacturing transitions and readiness, including first article inspections and product or fixture assembly issues, and help secure mass-production capacity, throughput, yield, and process capability. The position is onsite in a fast-paced environment, may require occasional coordination with colleagues in other time zones during late evening local hours, and includes travel to vendors, suppliers, and production facilities—mostly in China—approximately 10–20% of the time.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in engineering, such as mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace, or industrial engineering, or a related/equivalent field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in an engineering management or engineering team leadership role.
  • At least 5 years of technical experience, preferably in manufacturing engineering for complex electromechanical product industrialization at scale.
  • Experience with components or technologies such as machined parts, sheet metal, injection molding, PCBA, linear motors, LCDs, cables, and plastic components.
  • Experience with remotely managed NPI and contract manufacturers, including transitioning high-accuracy products from prototype to mass production.
  • Expertise in production quality metrics, GD&T, and process/equipment qualification procedures.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis methods such as DOE, comparison testing, and Gage R&R.
  • Proficiency in structured problem-solving methods such as A3, 8D, DMAIC, and fault-tree analysis.
  • Proficiency in process control methods such as statistical process control and process capability (Cp/Cpk).
  • Willingness to work onsite in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel to vendors, suppliers, and production facilities approximately 10–20% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Proto, EVT, DVT, PVT, and MP product development processes and life cycles.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification, with the ability to apply and teach problem-solving and statistical methods.
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as JMP or Minitab and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or SQL.
  • Onshape or SolidWorks CAD modeling skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of manufacturing engineering professionals supporting global manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams.
  • Sustain manufacturing lines at contract manufacturers and support their transition into production.
  • Characterize manufacturing-process and product failures; lead root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and mistake-proofing at suppliers and contract manufacturers for new builds and refurbishments.
  • Own manufacturing process control and issue prevention, including assembly, printer calibration, and verification testing.
  • Implement tools, equipment, and process methods to support reliability, quality, and yield.
  • Drive collaboration and provide player-coach support on complex engineering and operational challenges.
  • Own manufacturing technical readiness as a member of cross-functional NPI teams, emphasizing manufacturing return of experience, producibility, cost effectiveness, and industrialization.
  • Negotiate conflicting requirements; identify lessons learned and DFM/DFA/DFSS opportunities; share or escalate them to upstream design and downstream sustaining engineers.
  • Manage transition into manufacturing or industrialization, including resolving first article inspection and product or fixture assembly issues.
  • Drive manufacturing readiness maturity and secure mass-production capacity, throughput, yield, and process capability.
  • Occasionally coordinate with colleagues in different time zones during late evening local hours.
  • Travel to vendors, suppliers, and production facilities, mostly in China, approximately 10–20% of the time.

Benefits

  • Robust equity program with RSUs.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) matching and access to financial advisors.
  • Paid parental leave of up to 16 weeks.
  • Tenure-based paid sabbatical leave of up to 6 weeks.
  • Flexible Out of Office Plan.
  • On-site parking and pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • On-site lunches, snacks, beverages, and treats.
  • Sponsored professional development opportunities.
