About The Position

The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for managing complex accounting functions, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, preparing financial analyses, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records. This role serves as a key business partner to operational leaders and provides guidance on financial matters, process improvements, and compliance requirements. The successful candidate will possess strong technical accounting expertise, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while supporting multiple business units.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience in a multi-entity or complex business environment.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial modeling.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls and audit processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong business acumen and customer-service mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA designation (completed or in progress) preferred.
  • Experience in construction, environmental services, transportation, logistics, or waste management industries is considered an asset.
  • Jonas software experience is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and adjusting entries.
  • Analyze financial results and investigate variances against budget and prior periods.
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages and supporting schedules.
  • Assist in the preparation of consolidated financial statements.
  • Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Review transactions for proper accounting treatment and coding.
  • Conduct detailed financial and operational analysis to support decision-making.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
  • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities through data analysis.
  • Partner with operations and department leaders to improve financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support external audits by preparing schedules and responding to audit requests.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Assist with tax filings, government remittances, and other statutory reporting requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve efficiency.
  • Support system implementations, upgrades, and process automation initiatives.
  • Leverage ERP systems and advanced Excel tools to enhance reporting capabilities.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior accounting team members.
  • Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team environment.
  • Communicate financial information effectively to management and stakeholders.
  • Support special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned.
