About The Position

Purpose. Dignity. Action. (PDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to building support for non-punitive, community-based solutions to public safety issues. PDA advocates for legal system reform and develops alternatives to a punishment paradigm, focusing on individual and community health. The organization provides direct services through its CoLEAD program and offers technical assistance to partners. PDA grounds its reform efforts in a public health and safety framework, developing and implementing innovative strategies to improve conventional responses to crime and public order issues through policy advocacy, organizing, litigation, and public education. The Senior Accountant will be a key member of the Finance Team within the Operations and Administrative department. This role supports the agency's success across all program areas by assisting with accounting functions. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the position is customer-centered and aims to build and maintain positive relationships. The ideal candidate will possess a collaborative and innovative spirit, taking initiative to resolve issues. The Finance Team fosters trust and team building, and this role will contribute to these efforts. PDA is a fast-paced, multifaceted organization where team members are hands-on and support each other regardless of role or title.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as an accountant or similar role.
  • A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, some in a nonprofit setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or relevant degree.
  • Generally accepted accounting principles, practices and procedures.
  • General ledger organization and best practices.
  • Month-end close process and Financial reporting.
  • 5+ years GAAP accounting experience.
  • Strong background in general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Strong excel skills a must.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Accounting Software (QuickBooks Online).
  • Excel: Advanced proficiency required, Vlookups, pivot tables.
  • Microsoft Office including Word and PowerPoint; Adobe Acrobat and File Explorer.
  • Data processing applications; Report writing skills, Import/Export between programs.
  • Ability to balance accounts and reconcile financial statements.
  • Ability to review records for errors and inconsistencies.
  • Ability to build crosschecks and verifications into work to improve accuracy and provide audit trail.
  • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills. Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently but properly assess situations for needed assistance.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.

  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, G-Suite email system, and Adobe Acrobat Pro; ability to conduct internet research; and ability to learn and master new software applications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of complex professional-level accounting duties in a lead position.
  • Ensure expenses are coded and allocated according to grant and contract requirements, including reading and understanding finance-related compliance obligations in PDA’s revenue contracts.
  • Assist in the preparation, maintenance, and control of the general ledger, including allocations of income and expenses to programs and fiscal periods.
  • Review and analyze financial and program data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with PDA policies, funding rules, and governmental/non-governmental regulations.
  • Monitor financial transactions for accuracy and timely processing; maintain journals and ledgers for assigned activities and accounts, and report as requested.
  • Answer questions and provide information to internal and external stakeholders regarding accounting, budgeting, and funding regulations; analyze financial data and make recommendations.
  • Assist the finance team with the development, establishment, and monitoring of fund budgets.
  • In coordination with the Director of Finance, develop and document business processes and accounting policies to strengthen internal controls.
  • Ensure comprehensive understanding and compliance with all billing and budget requirements associated with revenue contracts, and determine if changes are needed to the general ledger structure or billing templates.
  • Maintain billing instructions, monitor and prepare the general ledger for billing, and gather supporting documentation.
  • Manage gift cards from receipt to reconciliation, including secure storage, tracking usage, and booking associated journal entries.
  • Ensure expenses are properly booked and allocated to grants and contracts under review.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual PDA budget.
  • Assist with Single Audit and Financial Statement audits.
  • Assist with SEFA and Grant Reporting.
  • Provide technical assistance to subrecipient(s).
  • Assist with setting up PDA Medicaid billing.
  • Assist with subrecipient monitoring.
  • Assist with monthly program reporting, ensuring accuracy of actuals mapped to budget categories.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
