About The Position

Great Plains Casualty is seeking a senior accountant to work across statutory, GAAP, and transactional reporting, with the initiative to improve processes. This role encompasses the full close, statutory and GAAP reporting, insurance-specific accounting cycles, and day-to-day accounts payable and receivable. The position involves collaboration with finance, claims, and underwriting functions, offering insight into how decisions in these areas impact financial statements. While insurance experience is a plus, it is not required; the company will invest in teaching the statutory side to candidates with a solid accounting foundation. The role provides exposure to the investment portfolio, its strategy, and pricing/rate decisions affecting program profitability, with potential for growth as the company expands.

  • Exposure to Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAPs) or NAIC Annual Statement preparation is a plus.
  • Public accounting experience preferred, especially in an insurance practice.
  • Experience with Sage is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of AI and automation tools, with interest in applying them to accounting workflows such as reconciliations, documentation, and analysis of large data sets.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for the monthly, quarterly, and annual close.
  • Prepare GAAP financial statements, management reporting packages, and GAAP to Statutory reconciliations.
  • Maintain close checklists and keep the close calendar on schedule.
  • Prepare NAIC Annual and Quarterly Statement schedules, exhibits, and workpapers.
  • Record loss and loss adjustment expense reserve activity with the actuarial function and prepare reserve rollforwards.
  • Account for written, earned, and unearned premium across direct, assumed, and ceded books.
  • Prepare audit exhibits and respond to external auditor requests for the GAAP and statutory audits.
  • Prepare state statutory filings and premium tax returns across all licensed states.
  • Complete other regulatory filings, including data calls, and guaranty fund assessments.
  • Support responses to regulatory inquiries and financial condition examinations.
  • Assist with the Risk-Based Capital calculation and monitor changes to Statutory Accounting Principles.
  • Evaluate current close, reporting, and transaction processes and recommend improvements to accuracy, cycle time, and controls.
  • Lead assigned process changes from proposal through implementation, documentation, and training.
  • Identify opportunities to apply automation and AI-enabled tools to repetitive work.
  • Write and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and desk documentation.
