Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; and Four (4) years of progressively responsible accounting experience in a large organization; or An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Knowledge of sales and use tax laws, regulations, and accounting principles.
  • Thorough understanding of municipal sales and use tax laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting, GAAP and GASB.
  • Strong knowledge of governmental accounting standards and financial reporting.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and make sound recommendations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
  • Ability to communicate complex tax regulations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for report writing, correspondence, providing customer service, giving presentations, directions, and feedback.
  • Ability to lead, manage, direct, and coordinate the work of direct staff including providing feedback, and informing others.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively deal with a variety of individuals within and outside the organization using effective problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Requires skills and abilities that include analyzing data, breaking down problems, identifying relationships between issues making complex plans. and displaying high attention to detail and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical accounting duties alongside supervisory responsibilities.
  • Oversees the review, processing, and reconciliation of sales and use tax returns submitted by businesses, ensuring accurate collection, reconciliation, and reporting of sales tax revenues.
  • Ensures confidentiality and security of taxpayer information.
  • Prepares and reviews monthly, quarterly, and annual sales tax revenue reports.
  • Reviews complex sales tax transactions for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Performs account reconciliations and resolves discrepancies.
  • Assists with analyzing revenue trends and preparing forecasts for budgeting purposes.
  • Responds to inquiries from taxpayers, businesses, auditors, and government agencies.
  • Participates in collection efforts for delinquent tax accounts, including correspondence and payment arrangements.
  • Prepares journal entries and maintains supporting documentation.
  • Prepares and/or reviews bank reconciliations and related journal entries.
  • Supports annual financial audits by providing tax records, schedules, and reconciliations.
  • Verifies and processes accounting data, completes and maintains general ledger accounts and funds.
  • Analyzes financial information to prepare reports, statements and schedules.
  • Completes and formats reports for use in financial analysis.
  • Reconciles and analyzes fund and account activity.
  • Assists with preparing periodic financial statements for all funds.
  • Assists with preparing fund financial statements for the comprehensive annual financial report (ACFR).
  • Independently identifies, researches, and resolves problems, develops controls and provides recommendations to improve the accounting processes.
  • Prepares and completes special projects and reports.
  • Interprets and implements authoritative pronouncements.
  • Assists with ERP system enhancements and related integrated systems as needed.
  • Develops and implements procedures to improve tax administration efficiency and internal controls.
  • Performs other accounting and finance-related duties as assigned.
  • May serve as an emergency worker.
