About The Position

The Senior Development Accountant performs various duties to support the accounting team responsible for the vertical development projects and related entities. This position is responsible for ensuring proper accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for various types and phases for real estate development projects. This position works closely and frequently with developers, equity partners, lenders and property managers in order to accurately and efficiently perform monthly tasks. This position reports to the Development Accounting Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting required.
  • 4-6 years of accounting experience, preferably corporate accounting, and reporting required.
  • Experience with real estate development or property management, including construction draws, budgets, and contracts required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced formula knowledge and experience with PivotTables and lookup functions required.
  • Must be able to work within specified deadlines and prioritize time effectively.
  • Ability to identify problems, collect and analyze data, and draw logical conclusions.
  • Ability to multitask and work as part of a team to meet team goals in addition to individual responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with MS Office applications. Advanced working knowledge of MS Excel is required.
  • Requires a detail-oriented, independent thinker who can be a part of a team and demonstrate strong attention to detail, and demonstrate knowledge of accounting practices and procedures.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and industry professionals.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Workday and/or other large ERP systems preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Upon Hire preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in accounting activities for new real estate development project closings, including review of partnership agreements, loan documents, purchase and sale agreements, guarantees, and closing statements.
  • Works closely with the development team to prepare and manage construction loan draws, capital calls, and related budget-to-actual analysis to support project funding requirements.
  • Serves as contact for auditors for documentation, support, and detailed schedules.
  • Manages positive, collaborative, and successful relationships with developers, partners, lenders, and vendors with respect to funding, payments, contracts, invoicing, and reporting.
  • Reviews complex debt, equity, guarantee, and ownership structures to ensure proper accounting treatment and corporate reporting compliance.
  • Prepares and assists in the review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting packages for corporate accounting, lenders, joint venture partners, and management.
  • Effectively manages the schedule for a portfolio of projects with various deadlines and requirements.
  • Assists in accounting for complex real estate transactions, including ownership modifications, development-to-operations transitions, hypothetical liquidation analysis, and property dispositions.
  • Serves as a strategic adviser to management by providing financial analysis, identifying risks, and developing creative solutions for project and accounting-related issues.
  • Maintains a drive towards process improvement, compliance, and reporting consistency across the development portfolio.
