About The Position

Under general supervision, to perform complex bookkeeping or financial record keeping work involving the maintenance of financial and statistical records; may perform duties of a lead worker over a small clerical staff; and to perform related work as required. Senior Account Clerks generally have responsibility for a complex bookkeeping or financial record keeping function. With considerable latitude, incumbents maintain important financial and statistical records, prepare regular and special reports, and apply a wide knowledge of current operations, procedures, rules, and precedents to assigned tasks and interpret this information to the public and County staff members. Typically, incumbents are assigned responsibility for the style, format, final appearance, and accuracy of completed assignments. A Senior Account Clerk may be delegated responsibility to act for the supervisor in that person's absence. Positions in this class may be required to supervise clerical assistants with such supervision usually being limited to the assignment and review of work. The next higher class of Supervising Account Clerk has regular and continuing supervisory responsibilities for subordinate staff.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience comparable to an Account Clerk II with Shasta County.
  • Two (2) years of full-time clerical accounting experience performing financial, statistical, and/or computerized financial data processing/record keeping work in an office environment.

  • Procedures, practices, and terminology used in bookkeeping, financial and statistical record keeping
  • Principles and techniques of supervision and training may be required for certain assignments.
  • Assume responsibility for a complex bookkeeping or financial record keeping function
  • Make decisions in procedural matters
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete financial and statistical records and reports
  • Recommend work improvements as necessary
  • Train and schedule the work of subordinate staff may be required for some assignments
  • Enter and retrieve data on a computer terminal
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Responsibilities

  • Assembles, sorts, matches, checks, codes, dates, numbers, lists and logs financial and statistical data
  • Processes items such as claims invoices, purchase orders, payments, warrants and tax statements
  • Verifies, balances and adjusts accounts and records
  • Receives and accounts for money
  • Computes financial penalties
  • Computes, adjusts, interprets and maintains payroll records
  • Posts to and works with ledger accounts and other records
  • Breaks out charges and allocates to appropriate source
  • Processes information for transmittal to Data Processing
  • Reconciles bank statements and prepares deposits
  • Makes arithmetical calculations
  • Prepares checks and warrants
  • Keeps various financial and statistical records and prepares regular and special reports
  • Operates calculating and bookkeeping machines, computer terminal and other office equipment
  • Maintains files
  • May assist the public and other employees by answering questions and explaining financial and payroll procedures and financial record keeping requirements
  • If assigned, assists and provides supervision and training to subordinate employees
