About The Position

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Semi-Skilled Laborer for its Greenspace Management team. The role performs routine tasks related to grounds maintenance operations, using and maintaining equipment as needed. Work may be performed as part of a team or individually. The position is designated as essential personnel under the City's Emergency Management Policy.

The role is based at various locations and is scheduled Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; the schedule is subject to change. The position involves extensive, near-continuous physical exertion, including repeated lifting of objects weighing more than 80 pounds, deep bending, climbing steps, and assuming awkward positions. It also involves routine exposure to extreme weather, moisture, and air pollution, as well as periodic exposure to chemical substances and minor physical trauma such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.

Requirements

• Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions, at a level normally acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.
• At least six months of working experience.
• Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy (AP 2-2).
• Ability to meet the position's physical demands, including repeated lifting of objects weighing more than 80 pounds, deep bending, climbing steps, and assuming awkward positions.

Nice To Haves

• Grounds maintenance experience is preferred.
• Applicants able to work day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts are preferred.
• Eligible veteran applicants may receive preference, subject to the stated qualifications and selection conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine tasks related to grounds maintenance operations.
• Operate and maintain equipment such as riding mowing units, lawn mowers, edgers, chainsaws, and rototillers.
• Work as a team member or individually as needed to meet work requirements.
• Assist with park maintenance quality inspections.
• Report problems and hazardous conditions to the designated authority.
• Prepare for special events, training, and other park activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
