At Hy-Vee our people are our strength. We promise “a helpful smile in every aisle” and those smiles can only come from a workforce that is fully engaged and committed to supporting our customers and each other. This role provides prompt and friendly service to customers, operates a cash register, packages product, works with drive-up and/or carry-out, and replenishes product as needed. The Self-Checkout Clerk assists customers with their orders at the self-checkout lanes, educates them on how to use the equipment, and performs product scanning and processing of customer orders accurately, efficiently, and promptly with occasional bagging. They ensure proper handling of all forms of tender and coupons, operate the cash register accurately, and redeem promotional coupons, food stamps, and WIC checks. Additionally, they issue rain checks, receive cash and checks, complete credit-card charge transactions, in-store charges, figure discounts, count back change, and issue receipts. The role also involves assisting the courtesy clerk position, placing merchandise in bags or boxes, giving packages to customers, answering customer questions and concerns, and following up with appropriate personnel. Understanding and following local, state, and company policies on sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets, as well as ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC and food stamps are crucial. The clerk must know the value, look-up numbers, department numbers, and features of items for which money is received. They are also responsible for stocking, facing, and rotating merchandise, cleaning shelves, understanding shelf tags, knowing merchandise locations, and taking customers to items when requested. Perceiving immediate surroundings for customer needs and problems, ensuring store safety and security, and communicating clearly on the intercom or telephone system are also key duties. The clerk reviews the weekly store ad for price changes and sale items, keeps the register area clean, ensures adequate supplies, reports improper cash levels, and helps maintain store appearance. Balancing cash in the register at the beginning and end of the shift is required, and they may give cash refunds or issue credit memorandums for returned merchandise. Maintaining strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress, reporting to work on time, and practicing proper sanitation procedures are expected.
