About The Position

The SEIU Materials Processing Specialist is responsible for inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts for various departments including the OR, Ambulatory Care Facilities, Hospital Units, and Research Clinics. This role involves operating sterilizers, preparing and dispensing sterile items, inspecting and stocking supplies, and performing general servicing of instruments and equipment to ensure they are in proper working order before issuance. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, within the Sterile Processing Department at the University of Rochester.

Requirements

  • One year of post-secondary education and 1 year of related materials processing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • If hired on or after January 1, 2014, candidate must pass a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians.
  • If hired on or after January 1, 2014, candidate must hold and maintain one of the following credentials administered by a nationally accredited central service technician credentialing organization within eighteen months of hire: certified registered central service technician credential; certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential; or a substantially equivalent credential.
  • If hired on or after January 1, 2014, twelve CEU credits must be obtained annually.
  • If hired on or before December 31, 2013, ten CEU credits must be obtained annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Registered Central Sterile Processing Distribution Technician preferred.
  • Computer experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, assembles, packages and sterilizes surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts.
  • Selects appropriate packaging and sterilization methods, consulting with the Processing Manager as needed.
  • Examines surgical instrumentation for cleanliness, proper assembly, and function.
  • Assembles instrument sets ensuring the correct number and type of instruments per ESI software program protocols.
  • Handles instruments appropriately to ensure sterilization.
  • Completes count/supply sheets to document tray contents.
  • Follows established procedures to package/wrap trays/instruments to guarantee sterilization.
  • Operates steam sterilizers in accordance with established procedures, monitoring time, pressure, and temperature gauges.
  • Loads and unloads sterilizers and places items on shelves for distribution.
  • Performs simple maintenance of sterilizers, such as cleaning drain baskets.
  • Prepares cultures, reviews test packs, interprets results, and completes required documentation to assure sterility.
  • Checks and adjusts medical equipment according to specific procedures to ensure proper operation before issuing.
  • Sends equipment not meeting specifications to the appropriate area for repair.
  • Decontaminates surgical instruments and equipment following established procedures.
  • Prevents cross-contamination per established procedures.
  • Sets up decontamination equipment for operation.
  • Cleans and disinfects equipment and work area upon completion of shift.
  • Handles infectious waste and linen according to established protocol.
  • Receives and stores supplies from outside vendors and Hospital areas.
  • Checks stock against requisitions as it is received.
  • Documents received stock and reports discrepancies.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory par levels.
  • Documents and fills orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas.
  • Delivers supplies when warranted.
  • Maintains records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment referred for repair.
  • Responsible for quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments.
  • Performs daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts.
  • Responsible for critical documentation such as biologicals and sterilizer load sheets.
