This role offers a varied and meaningful career path. The Seed Technician focuses on setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting manufacturing production. They operate machines or equipment, set up and adjust factors such as temperature, pressure, flow, and material reactions, and manually control the unit or operate via a control system. The role involves running up and shutting down production facilities, including product changeover activities, cleaning and decontaminating equipment, and maintaining housekeeping of the workplace. Responsibilities also include driving forklifts, filling and taking over tank wagons, conducting routine analytics, and taking samples. The Seed Technician will coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs with the technical team and document and communicate work results during shift handovers.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic knowledge of IT (Internet, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, or facilities with systems)
  • Valid Driver's License. Driving record must meet guidelines based on the company’s Risk Screening for Hiring Drivers – MVR will be reviewed as part of pre-employment screening to be eligible to drive a company car.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 60 lbs. (a bag of seed)
  • Ability to work days, nights, rotating shifts, weekends and overtime as business needs require.
  • Advanced education including Technical, Associates, or Bachelor’s degree.
  • Intermediate computer skills with experience using SAP and PLC.
  • 3+ years of manufacturing experience, with experience in chemical or row crop manufacturing.
  • Previous experience working in a manufacturing environment with a 24/7 rotating shift schedule, including overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Operating machinery/equipment for the production process and managing our grower network as applicable.
  • Ensuring that the production process happens safely, effectively, and with quality in alignment with general procedures of the area.
  • Mentoring new employees, performing basic maintenance of equipment, and handling basic activities in Bayer systems (SAP and electronic networks) commonly used in production processes.
  • Operating equipment in the production sites and leveraging real-time data to maximize existing procedures.
  • Performing preventative maintenance and inspection; troubleshooting problems associated with equipment, processes, and systems as needed.
  • Supporting areas across the plant in driving the adoption of continuous improvement practices and programs (5S, Lean, Six Sigma) conducive to an organized and clean work environment.
  • Utilizing Focused Improvement (e.g. 5WHYs) techniques to initiate process and standard work improvements.
  • Providing coaching and training to seasonal workforce, area trainees, and peers supporting achievement and personal development.
  • Ensuring upstream activities (e.g. field inspection, grower contracts) are handled within company standards and business requirements.
  • Cultivating partnership with key business partners to plant/field operations (e.g. grower network).
  • Using SAP to support administrative procedures, documenting key readings, maintenance orders, and production information.
  • Maintaining key process documentation (operating, start-up and shut-down procedures; standard work process flow and instrumentation diagrams, etc).
  • Demonstrating knowledge of and adherence to Bayer’s Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) standards (e.g. general shop floor/machine safety and operating procedures).
  • Complying with internal procedures and supporting compliance with legal requirements applicable to area activities.
  • Participating and preparing to lead Daily Direction Setting (DDS) meetings as needed; articulating shift objectives and allocating resources accordingly across all active production areas.
  • Supporting and maintaining metrics and relevant information on current Visual Management boards to drive teamwork and facilitate shift changeover.
