About The Position

The Metro Boston Area Department of Mental Health (DMH) is currently hiring for the position of Security Team Specialist II. This position is 40 hours per week, working the first shift, (7:00 am – 3:00 pm). Days off are Tuesday and Wednesday. The role involves supervising Security Team Specialists I, patrolling buildings and grounds to prevent trespass, theft, fire, and property damage, and maintaining order among visitors and staff. Responsibilities include traffic control, screening visitors, providing personal protection, assisting with custodial supervision of clients, coordinating maintenance of safety equipment, monitoring alarm systems, preparing reports, and preserving crime scenes. The DMH Mission is to assure and provide access to services and support to meet the mental health needs of individuals of all ages, enabling them to live, work and participate in their communities. The Department establishes standards to ensure effective and culturally competent care to promote recovery, sets policy, promotes self-determination, protects human rights, and supports mental health training and research.

Requirements

• Skill to deal tactfully with others and interact with individuals who are under physical and/or emotional stress.
• Capability to maintain a calm composure in stressful and emergency situations.
• Ability to make decisions and acting quickly in dangerous or emergency situations.
• Capacity to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
• Demonstrated proficiency in gathering information through questioning individuals, conducting interviews, and gathering information by examining records and documents.
• Ability to lift persons or heavy objects.
• At least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in work involving the protection and/or security of buildings, equipment or individuals or any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.
• Applicants applying for positions within the Department of Youth Services, Department of Mental Health and Department of Public Health are required to obtain and maintain a valid certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and first aid.
• Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment.

Nice To Haves

• Prior health care facility security or law enforcement experience.
• CPR Certified, First Responder and NARCAN trained.
• Ability to solve problems and relate to hospital staff, constituents, and other community members in a positive and professional manner.

• Bilingual or multilingual fluency is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervisor of Security Team Specialists I.
• Patrols all buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas of the hospital at regular intervals and guards against trespass, theft, fire, and damage to property.
• Maintains order among visitors and staff; maintains motor vehicle traffic controls on hospital grounds including parking, speeding and other traffic conditions and takes necessary measures to prevent unauthorized use of hospital roads and parking facilities.
• Performs security duties such as screening visitors, directing traffic, and enforcing parking controls.
• Provides personal protection to individuals as required including but not limited to, searching for missing goods and persons, conducting surveillance, and investigating complaints and reports of suspicious activities.
• Assists with providing custodial supervision of medically ill and mental health clients, and escorts them to various appointments.
• Coordinates the maintenance of hospital firefighting equipment, alarm systems and other safeguards; reports defects and request repairs in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and requirements.
• Monitors hospital switchboard, gauges, and alarm indicator panels; takes necessary action in event of malfunction or alarm, including system resets.
• Prepares reports on investigations conducted and noteworthy incidents during tour of duty.
• Preserves crime scenes and fire sites, performs searches and inspections, serves court summons to patients or staff, and performs job related duties for safety and security as necessary and as directed.
