About The Position

The Security Specialist fosters a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for guests, clients, donors, volunteers, and staff. The role deters unlawful activity, protects Tacoma Rescue Mission’s people and property, and ensures compliance with established rules and regulations using a trauma-informed, person-first, and grace-based approach. The position interacts with people from diverse backgrounds, monitors behavior, provides customer service, and encourages compliance with TRM policies. It patrols the Downtown Campus, responds to requests for assistance and emergencies, helps de-escalate crisis situations, documents and reports incidents, and contacts first responders when needed. The role also maintains resident confidentiality and supports the organization’s mission and an effective work environment. The position is scheduled Thursday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Downtown Campus in Tacoma, Washington. Work takes place indoors and outdoors and includes light custodial duties. The role requires active movement throughout the shift, occasional quick response and stair climbing, frequent handling of boxes weighing up to 25 pounds, and use of appropriate personal protective equipment when necessary.

Requirements

Two years of experience in related work.
Experience working with or serving alongside marginalized communities.
Basic operating knowledge of office equipment, computers, and Microsoft Office Suites.
Effective de-escalation skills.
Ability to work in and respond effectively to a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
Capacity to accomplish multiple tasks within a short time.
Interpersonal skills.
Clear and effective written, verbal, and electronic communication skills.
Ability to actively move for the duration of an entire shift across surfaces such as carpet, tile, and concrete.
Ability to occasionally move quickly in response to urgent situations and ascend or descend stairs to inspect facility areas.
Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and exchange accurate information.
Ability to observe details at close range.
Ability to frequently move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
Ability to frequently work in outdoor weather conditions.
Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment when necessary for exposure control.

Responsibilities

Interact with guests, clients, donors, volunteers, and staff; monitor behavior, maintain rapport, provide excellent customer service, and encourage compliance with TRM policies and procedures.
Regularly patrol the assigned campus, including interior areas and the campus exterior and surroundings, to help ensure safety.
Collaborate with other staff and respond to requests for assistance.
Manage security infringements and emergencies, including loitering, traffic or crowd control, trespassing, fire, medical situations, and threats; perform crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed.
Maintain concise and complete daily documentation, investigate security-related accidents and incidents, and report them to a supervisor for follow-up and direction.
Contact police, fire departments, and other first responders as directed or needed.
Maintain resident confidentiality and store and dispose of documents according to TRM standards.
Model organizational values and support TRM’s mission of sharing God’s love, hope, and support with neighbors in need.
Perform other duties as assigned to support an efficient and effective work environment.
