UNIV- Security Specialist III-Public Safety
About The Position
This position involves patrolling assigned areas diligently, with a focus on rechecking locations where problems have been frequent. The role includes patrolling buildings to check for fire, prowlers, vandalism, and other unusual activities. The Security Specialist will make rounds of the assigned area at least three times during the shift, documenting and verbally reporting discrepancies. The individual must sustain attentiveness and promptly respond to all emergencies, knowing the locations of call boxes and fire extinguishers. Coordination with other officers, checking IDs and passes, and courteously assisting persons seeking directions or information are also key responsibilities. The role requires knowledge of safety, security, and fire protection practices, the ability to act quickly in emergencies, adjust to fluctuating situations, investigate incidents, and deal courteously and firmly with the public. Duties include monitoring alarms and CCTV, performing the duties of a Public Safety Officer (non-arrest powers), ticketing unauthorized vehicles, escorting persons, and detaining suspicious individuals. The role also involves operating a two-way radio and informing the relieving officer of important information. Additional requirements include obtaining and maintaining a valid driver's license, computer literacy, and the ability to work overtime. Familiarity with South Carolina laws and effective communication skills are necessary.
Requirements
- Knowledge of the practices and techniques of safety, security and fire protection.

- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.

- Familiarity with the state, county and city laws of South Carolina.
- Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with the general public.
- Knowledge of methods of security in building and grounds.
- A high school diploma.
- Three years of experience in fire prevention, safety or security activities.
- Certification by the Department of Public Safety, in accordance with Section 23-6-430 of the 1976 South Carolina Code of Laws.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted.
- Ability to lift, drag, pull persons to safety, weighing up to 300 lbs., assisted.
- Ability to hear and recognize various sounds within noisy background areas.
- Ability to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes, corrected.
- Ability to climb stairs to the top floor of any building within the institution.
- Olfactory sense must be intact in order to smell unusual odors.
- Ability to carry heavy objects, i.e. persons, a distance of 15 to 20 feet in emergency situations.
- Ability to engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders.
- Ability to sit.
Responsibilities

- Sustains attentiveness.

- Responds punctually to all assignments and immediately to all emergencies.
- Monitors alarms and CCTV (closed circuit television).
- Performs duty of Public Safety Officer (non-arrest powers), assist supervisory personnel in peace and decorum in building and on grounds, Tickets unauthorized vehicles parked in areas reserved for emergency vehicles, loading zones, handicapped or decal required areas.
- Notifies supervisor or officer assigned to the areas if the vehicle is created a problem.
- Escorts persons as required.
- Detains suspicious persons loitering and notifies Dispatchers.
- Operates two-way radio and responds per the direction of Dispatcher.
- Informs the relieving officer of all information and concerns of interest or importance to them in the proper performance of their job duty.
