About The Position

The Security Specialist III-Public Safety position involves patrolling assigned areas diligently, with a focus on rechecking locations where problems have been frequent. The role includes patrolling buildings to check for fire, prowlers, vandalism, and other unusual activities. Responsibilities also include making rounds at least three times during a shift, documenting discrepancies, and verbally reporting them. The position requires prompt response to all emergencies, knowledge of emergency equipment locations, coordination with other officers, and checking IDs and passes. Additionally, the role involves courteously assisting the public with directions, information, or assistance. The job also includes monitoring alarms and CCTV, performing duties of a Public Safety Officer (non-arrest powers), assisting supervisory personnel, ticketing unauthorized vehicles, escorting persons, and detaining suspicious individuals while notifying dispatchers. Operating a two-way radio and informing the relieving officer of important information are also key duties. Additional requirements include the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license, computer literacy, and the ability to work overtime as required. Familiarity with South Carolina laws and effective communication with the public are also necessary.

Requirements

Knowledge of the practices and techniques of safety, security and fire protection.

Ability to deal courteously and firmly with the general public.
A high school diploma and three years of experience in fire prevention, safety or security activities.
Certification by the Department of Public Safety, in accordance with Section 23-6-430 of the 1976 South Carolina Code of Laws.
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
Computer literacy.
Ability to work overtime as required.
Familiarity with the state, county and city laws of South Carolina.
Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with the general public.
Knowledge of methods of security in building and grounds.
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time. (Continuous)
Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted. (Infrequent)
Ability to lift, drag, pull persons to safety, weighing up to 300 lbs., assisted. (Infrequent)
Ability to hear and recognize various sounds within noisy background areas. (Continuous)
Ability to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes, corrected. (Continuous)
Ability to climb stairs to the top floor of any building within the institution. (Infrequent)
Olfactory sense must be intact in order to smell unusual odors. (Continuous)
Ability to carry heavy objects, i.e. persons, a distance of 15 to 20 feet in emergency situations. (Infrequent)
Ability to engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders. (Infrequent)

Responsibilities

Patrols assigned areas diligently, giving particular attention to and often rechecking those locations where problems have been frequent.
Patrols building checking for fire, prowlers, vandalism, and other unusual activities.
Makes rounds of assigned area at least three times during the shift, appropriately documents and verbally reports discrepancies.
Sustains attentiveness.
Promptly responds to all emergencies.
Knows locations of call boxes and fire extinguishers.
Coordinates with other officers.
Checks IDs and passes.
Courteously assists all persons seeking directions, information or assistance.
Monitors alarms and CCTV (closed circuit television).
Performs duty of Public Safety Officer (non-arrest powers).
Assist supervisory personnel in peace and decorum in building and on grounds.
Tickets unauthorized vehicles parked in areas reserved for emergency vehicles, loading zones, handicapped or decal required areas.
Notifies supervisor or officer assigned to the areas if the vehicle is created a problem.
Escorts persons as required.
Detains suspicious persons loitering and notifies Dispatchers.
Operates two-way radio and responds per the direction of Dispatcher.
Informs the relieving officer of all information and concerns of interest or importance to them in the proper performance of their job duty.
