About The Position

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a cross-trained, full-service, public safety call-taker and dispatcher to join their Security Operations Center team. This role focuses on ensuring timely call-taking, dispatching, and call processing during peak business hours, Monday through Friday. The successful candidate will be part of a hardworking team of security experts supporting APL's mission, committed to providing a superior product and fostering an environment of initiative and security vigilance.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
Successfully employed as a Police and/or Fire cross-trained call-taker and dispatcher at a 911 Center (public safety answering point) for 5 or more years.
A total of 10 or more years of post-academic work experience in a business or public safety field.
Thorough knowledge of the use of computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
Ability to quickly process emergency and non-emergency calls for service, enter CAD data, dispatch personnel, and status calls.
Emergency Medical Dispatch certified.
Skilled in using personal computers and word processing.
Effective oral and written communication in English.
Ability to obtain an Interim Top Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance.
U.S. citizenship (for security clearance eligibility).

Nice To Haves

Supervisory experience supervising the daily operations of a 911 Center.
Experience updating and making modifications to CAD databases.
Experience as a Communications Training Officer (CTO).

Responsibilities

Answer emergency and non-emergency calls.
Process calls using a computer-aided dispatch system.
Dispatch calls for service.
Evaluate situations and determine the appropriate safety response.
Make notifications to and coordinate service responses by the APL Security Force, the APL Fire Department, and APL’s facilities management professionals.
Monitor and act on information from alarm systems, video monitoring systems, and access control systems.
Coordinate the daily activities of the APL Security Force.
Utilize skills developed in a public safety answering point environment.
