About The Position

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a cross-trained, full-service, public safety call-taker and dispatcher to join their Security Operations Center team. This role focuses on ensuring timely call-taking, dispatching, and call processing during peak business hours, Monday through Friday. The successful candidate will be part of a hardworking team of security experts supporting APL's mission, committed to providing a superior product and fostering an environment of initiative and security vigilance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Successfully employed as a Police and/or Fire cross-trained call-taker and dispatcher at a 911 Center (public safety answering point) for 5 or more years.
  • A total of 10 or more years of post-academic work experience in a business or public safety field.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use of computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
  • Ability to quickly process emergency and non-emergency calls for service, enter CAD data, dispatch personnel, and status calls.
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch certified.
  • Skilled in using personal computers and word processing.
  • Effective oral and written communication in English.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Top Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship (for security clearance eligibility).

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience supervising the daily operations of a 911 Center.
  • Experience updating and making modifications to CAD databases.
  • Experience as a Communications Training Officer (CTO).

Responsibilities

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Process calls using a computer-aided dispatch system.
  • Dispatch calls for service.
  • Evaluate situations and determine the appropriate safety response.
  • Make notifications to and coordinate service responses by the APL Security Force, the APL Fire Department, and APL’s facilities management professionals.
  • Monitor and act on information from alarm systems, video monitoring systems, and access control systems.
  • Coordinate the daily activities of the APL Security Force.
  • Utilize skills developed in a public safety answering point environment.
