About The Position

The Security Officer enforces laws, rules, and regulations and maintains order in Enoch Pratt Free Library branches, departments, and surrounding grounds. The officer works at various branch locations on a varied schedule that includes day, evening, and weekend hours. Work conditions may involve occasional exposure to inclement weather and physical violence. The position reports to the Security Officer Supervisor. Duties include inspecting and patrolling library buildings and grounds, conducting final evening security and closing checks, monitoring people entering and leaving, maintaining order, monitoring CCTV cameras, responding to alarms and assistance calls, investigating breaches, and writing detailed reports. The listed duties are not exhaustive and may vary according to department needs.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
At least 21 years of age.
Three years of experience in security, law enforcement, or military service.
Experience writing incident reports.
Valid driver's license.
Experience with MS Word and MS Excel.
Obtain commission as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland within one year from the date of hire.
Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices, laws of arrest, criminal investigation techniques, and court systems and procedures.
Knowledge of the operation and use of security equipment.
Ability to read and interpret laws, policies, and regulations.
Basic computer skills and ability to navigate databases.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of people and agencies.
Excellent written communication skills.
Standing and walking for long periods, and various levels of physical exertion in response to public safety issues.
Authorize the release of information for and successfully complete a criminal conviction check.
Submit to drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

Current Special Police Officer commission by the State of Maryland.
Prior security, law enforcement, campus security, or military experience.
Certification in CPR, First Aid, handcuffs, and/or baton.
Experience with Johnson Controls or Simplex security systems.

Responsibilities

Inspect library buildings and areas, including public departments, reading areas, stacks, restrooms, entrances, exits, parking areas, machinery rooms, and roofs, according to assigned schedules.
Patrol Central Library and/or branch buildings and grounds for safety and security hazards.
Conduct final evening security and closing checks of library buildings.
Enforce library rules and regulations, observe the movement of people entering and leaving, and maintain order among crowds.
Monitor CCTV cameras.
Respond to alarms and calls for assistance and promptly and thoroughly investigate breaches.
Write detailed reports, including daily logs and monthly safety reports.
