About The Position

The Indianapolis Zoo's Security team works diligently to provide a safe, secure environment for guests, volunteers, employees, animals, and plants. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, 3rd shift position that requires the flexibility to work varying shifts and schedules. Open availability along with working weekends, evenings, and holidays are a requirement. Security Officers interact with Zoo employees, guests, and volunteers daily, requiring excellent verbal communication skills. Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Have a valid Indiana driver's license insurable by the Zoo's insurance
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Ability to successfully pass First Aid Training/Certification
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal / communication skills
  • Fluency in the English language is required
  • Must have the ability to use and/ or learn Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to frequently move from area to area while transporting items (up to 50 pounds) across Zoo grounds for various needs
  • Ability to position items (up to 100 pounds) short distances
  • Requires the stamina to frequently move from area to area rapidly for long durations of time
  • Must possess the ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures
  • Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium while performing various jobs
  • Exceptional visual acuity is required
  • Ability to communicate, comprehend, and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio
  • Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens
  • Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.)
  • Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines
  • Open availability
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts and schedules
  • Successful completion of pre-employment testing including a background check, motor vehicle check (if applicable) and a drug test

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of professional work experience in a related field (security, law enforcement, military or extensive customer service experience) preferred
  • Verbal skills in other languages is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe, secure environment for guests, volunteers, employees, animals, and plants

  • Investigate unusual or suspicious situations
  • Conduct safety/security inspections
  • Maintain records and logs as assigned
  • Enforce Zoo procedures and regulations
  • Perform any other tasks directed by management
  • Interact with Zoo employees, guests, and volunteers daily
