About The Position

This position will assist in the provision of safety and security of guests, staff, collection animals and property. The role involves performing routine foot, bike, and vehicular patrols throughout the facility and parking lots, observing the Zoo during evening and overnight hours for any out of the ordinary activities. The officer acts as an Ambassador of the Fort Worth Zoo at all times, interacting courteously with Zoo guests, providing information and directions, and assisting with lost children and injured guests. Duties are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines, addressing the public in a calm, professional, and ethical manner. The officer responds to and enforces violations of local, state, and federal laws and compliance with Zoo policies on Zoo property, and mitigates security-related incidents. Safeguarding company assets, property, equipment, and facilities against illegal and destructive acts is also a key responsibility. The role includes responding to medical situations, administering first aid and CPR assistance within certification limits, and arranging for emergency medical attention. The officer will also respond to and control emergency situations, perform crowd control duties, and manage alarms in coordination with the duty supervisor. Vigilance in observing and reporting safety or hazardous situations, controlling access to the Zoo through assigned gates, and conducting building inspections are also part of the role. Proper use and security of Zoo equipment and vehicles, submitting written reports of all incidents, practicing good safety awareness, and participating in job-related training are essential.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed by Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Bureau (DPS-PSB)
  • Commissioned Security Officer with valid security license
  • Must function in a non-discriminatory manner
  • Must possess the ability to make mature and sound judgments, defuse and resolve conflicts
  • Must have capacity to perform under stress when confronted with an emergency, unusual, or dangerous situations
  • Available to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, and midnights as well as weekends and holidays and overtime
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Successful complete and receive certification as a Commissioned Security Officer through the Texas Department of Public Safety, Private Security Bureau
  • Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain zoo standards of insurability
  • Successfully complete and maintain basic first aid, CPR and AED training certifications set forth by the American Red Cross or equivalent association
  • Ability to stand, walk, or cycle for long periods of time (approximately 75 % of their shift)
  • Ability to climb stairs, bend and stoop during the execution of duties
  • Ability to lift and carry a weight up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to physically intervene or restrain persons acting in a disruptive or disorderly manner

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in security field (proprietary or contract security force), law enforcement, military police, emergency services, completion of a recognized law enforcement or security academy or college courses in criminal justice/ law enforcement/ public safety/ emergency management

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties in accordance with established policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Address and handle the public in a calm, professional and ethical manner; responding appropriately to guest requests and complaints in an accurate, courteous and prompt manner
  • Respond to and enforce violations of local, state and federal laws and compliance with Zoo policies, with respect to infractions occurring on Zoo property and in the immediate perimeter area (includes parking lots)
  • Report infractions of the law occurring off Zoo property to the appropriate law enforcement agencies or Zoo department
  • Respond to security related incidents occurring on Zoo property, mitigating and defusing situations
  • Safeguard company assets, property, equipment and facilities against illegal and destructive acts
  • Respond to medical related situations and incidents; will administer first aid and CPR assistance (within certification and training limits) when appropriate and arrange for emergency medical attention through the duty supervisor as necessary
  • Respond to and control emergency situations; perform crowd control duties, administer first aid and CPR when appropriate (within certification and training limits), and arrange for emergency medical, fire and law enforcement response as determined necessary by Public Safety management
  • Be vigilant to observe, report and note any possible safety or hazardous situations while on patrol or at a stationary post
  • Control access to the Zoo through assigned gates; checking, logging and clearing authorized personnel and vehicles who present proper identification or passes when attempting to gain access to the zoo
  • Conduct building inspections and patrol
  • Respond to and manage all alarms i.e. intrusion, burglar, fire etc., as dispatched in coordination with the duty supervisor
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Ensure proper use and security of Zoo equipment; operate and maintain equipment and vehicles in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Submit written reports, without exception, of all incidents and activities occurring on Zoo property and in the immediate perimeter area (includes parking lots) relative to the Fort Worth Zoo
  • Practice good safety awareness at all times. Ensure the cleanliness of the Zoo assisting in picking up trash
  • Participate in job-related training courses to maintain skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to perform essential duties safely and professionally
  • Maintain proficiency in the use of all assigned officer protective equipment and restraining devices
  • Use sound judgment when assessing and responding to routine as well as emergency situations
  • Maintain open and professional communication with Shift Supervisors and management
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information disclosed, accidentally discovered or communicated as an Officer - with or without specific instructions to do so - of employees, guests and concession partners
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information related to incidents or events involving the Zoo to unauthorized personnel i.e. radio, television, newspapers and other press/media personnel
