About The Position

The Denver Public Library (DPL) is seeking a Security Officer II to work at the Central Library. This role is crucial in creating positive experiences for library customers by maintaining a safe and secure environment for both customers and staff. The position includes on-the-job training to develop skills and abilities related to the role, such as certification in First Aid, CPR, AED usage, Narcan usage, defensive tactics, and verbal de-escalation training. The Denver Public Library is a vibrant, essential hub for the diverse city of Denver, with 28 locations and over 4 million annual visitors. Requirements

  • Solid customer service background and commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Knowledge of safety and security in a public setting.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and safety hazards.
  • Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, and other software.

  • Ability to pass a physical and mental fitness examination and a background check after the offer to hire has been made.
  • Ability to successfully complete Narcan, Verbal De-escalation, and Defensive Tactics training.
  • Ability to obtain an unarmed security guard license issued by the City and County of Denver.
  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • One year of experience working with security and safety issues, including reporting unauthorized activity or emergencies.
  • Valid Driver’s License at the time of application.
  • Possession of an Unarmed Business Guard License issued by the City and County of Denver at the time of employment.
  • Ability to obtain first aid and CPR certification by the American Red Cross within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid work authorization that does not require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Trauma Informed Care or Mental Health First Aid preferred.
  • One year of experience working with security or loss prevention.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for library customers and staff.

  • Respond to emergencies and handle stressful situations.
  • Report unauthorized activity or emergencies.
  • Delegate tasks to a team when necessary.
  • Complete concise and grammatically correct reports.
  • Work effectively in a diverse environment with constant public contact.
  • Creatively solve problems, including situations involving trauma, mental illness, substance abuse, and unhoused populations.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor.
  • Develop and maintain a welcoming environment for young people.
  • Potentially work at any of the library's branches based on operational needs.
  • Be redeployed to work in other locations or capacities to support core functions of the library system during branch closures or other emergencies.
