Security Engineering Manager

Viavi Solutions•Chandler, AZ

About The Position

VIAVI Solutions is seeking a Manager, Security Engineering to provide technical leadership across its enterprise security engineering and architecture portfolio. The role drives the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of security technologies and technical controls across cloud, identity, endpoint, network, data security, AI, and emerging technologies. It is a hands-on player-coach position: the manager develops security engineering capabilities while directly contributing to architecture, engineering, technology evaluation, solution design, implementation, and technical problem solving. The role partners with Cyber Defense, Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC), Product Security, IT, and Engineering to turn security and risk requirements into practical, scalable technical solutions. The manager leads security engineering and architecture, establishes engineering standards and reference architectures, evaluates technologies, and maintains the security engineering roadmap. They provide technical security leadership for AI and emerging technologies, including defining guardrails and architecture patterns, contributing to AI threat modeling, and developing security review practices. The role also develops controls for data protection and least-privilege access, works with partners to improve security visibility and response, leads security architecture reviews and technical risk assessments, and provides technical recommendations on exceptions, remediation, and control improvements. As a leader, the manager builds and mentors security engineering talent, sets priorities, promotes documentation and repeatability, and communicates technical risks and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders.

  • Experience with cloud and SaaS security architectures.
  • Experience with data security technologies, including DLP, CASB, SWG, or SSE capabilities.
  • Experience with identity, endpoint, network, or application security technologies.
  • Experience with threat modeling, secure development practices, or security automation.
  • Relevant industry certifications such as CISSP, CCSP, or comparable technical certifications.
  • Previous people-management or technical team leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, engineering, implementation, and continuous improvement of enterprise security technologies and controls.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership in security architecture, solution design, implementation, integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Establish security engineering principles, standards, reference architectures, and repeatable design patterns.
  • Evaluate security technologies for effectiveness, scalability, integration, and opportunities for optimization or consolidation.

  • Drive automation and integration across security and enterprise technology platforms.
  • Provide technical security leadership for AI, GenAI, LLMs, autonomous agents, and other emerging technologies.
  • Define security architecture patterns and technical guardrails for AI applications, platforms, and integrations.
  • Lead or contribute to AI threat modeling, including risks involving prompt injection, data leakage, model and application abuse, excessive agency, privilege escalation, and third-party integrations.
  • Partner with IT, Product, and Engineering teams to incorporate security into AI solution architecture and development practices.
  • Develop security review and validation practices for higher-risk AI implementations.
  • Translate AI governance and risk requirements into practical technical controls.
  • Assess emerging AI security technologies and integrate appropriate capabilities into the broader security architecture.
  • Develop technical approaches for protecting sensitive information across enterprise and AI environments.
  • Establish least-privilege access-control patterns for systems, applications, AI services, APIs, and data.
  • Partner on the implementation and optimization of data protection capabilities, including DLP and applicable SaaS/web security controls.
  • Develop technical controls to reduce inappropriate exposure of sensitive information through AI services and integrations.
  • Partner with GRC, Privacy, and data owners to translate data-protection requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Partner with Cyber Defense to improve security visibility, detection, and response capabilities.
  • Partner with GRC to translate risk, compliance, and policy requirements into sustainable technical controls.
  • Partner with Product Security on security architecture and engineering matters where enterprise and product environments intersect.
  • Partner with IT and Engineering to embed security within technology architecture and implementation.
  • Perform and lead security architecture reviews and support technical security risk assessments.
  • Provide technical recommendations for security exceptions, risk remediation, and control improvements.
  • Balance leadership responsibilities with direct technical contribution as a player-coach.
  • Build, mentor, and develop security engineering capabilities and technical talent.
  • Establish priorities and promote engineering discipline, documentation, repeatability, and accountability.
  • Communicate complex technical risks and recommendations effectively to technical and business stakeholders.
