About The Position

Barrington Public Schools is seeking a Secondary Social Studies Teacher to plan, facilitate, implement, and deliver the full instructional program in a secondary school setting using cross-disciplinary approaches. The successful candidate will guide students to reach or exceed grade level expectations and encourage each child to reach their full potential. This role supports Barrington's commitment to diversity, inclusion, respect, and equity in education. Preference will be given to candidates who articulate their commitment to valuing inclusivity, diversity, and belonging.

Requirements

  • Secondary Social Studies Certification Granted by the Rhode Island Department of Education Required
  • Trained at the Awareness level for Right to Read, or will become trained upon hire

Responsibilities

  • Teaches courses in Social Studies/humanities using the Barrington Public Schools’ curricula.
  • Implements the tenets of RULER.
  • Implements a balanced Social Studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry.
  • Develops the core literacy standards and expectations aligned to the Common Core State Standards and Right to Read.
  • Develops state civics and social studies standards.
  • Provides many opportunities for reading high quality texts and applying what they know through Harkness Discussions, writing, project-based learning, and Deep Learning critical thinking, communication, citizenship, character, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Develops knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of cultural relevance and culturally responsive and sustaining teaching practices.
  • Makes current material from the mass-media available to students; plans and guides discussions of current problems against the materials being studied.
  • Develops an understanding of the contributions of racial, religious, and political groups.
  • Develops knowledge of historical, political, cultural, and economic systems of other nations and their influence on personal freedom, education, and living standards.
  • Encourages students to become aware of the complexity and interrelations of local, state, national, and world problems, using the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as the foundation.
  • Promotes the attainment of the District’s Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan.
  • Displays strong and deep knowledge of the philosophical foundations and content of the curriculum.
  • Applies current research-based best instructional practices and strategies to deliver the curriculum and understands how knowledge is constructed within the discipline and Deep Learning competencies.
  • Plans and prepares lessons to optimize learning, using the Deep Learning Design Template as a framework where applicable.
  • Promotes deep understanding of content by addressing unique learning styles, adapting instruction to meet the needs of all students, engaging students in rigorous learning experiences, using effective questioning techniques, and relating instruction to the student's life and to prior and future learning, connected to Universal Design for Learning.
  • Contribute to and implement plans, including but not limited to IEPs, 504s, and individual health plans, for students with unique needs.
  • Reinforces strong student engagement and excellent student work products.
  • Facilitates student learning using various collaborative grouping structures appropriate to the instructional task.
  • Requires students to regularly engage in high-level activities, including application and analysis of information, as defined by the Deep Learning Progressions.
  • Administers and interprets several types of assessments of and for learning.
  • Maintains accurate student records because of the monitoring of regular formative and summative assessment of curriculum attainment; adjusts instruction for individuals and groups of students.
  • Makes appropriate referrals and is prepared with credible and accurate documentation.
  • Considers student voice in establishing and enforcing effective and positive classroom rules, curriculum, and procedures designed to ensure safety and enhance learning.
  • Organizes all facets of the instructional delivery system so that all equipment and instructional tools are ready for use, and ensures smooth transitions, maximizes time on tasks, and guarantees the efficient distribution of resources.
  • Integrates technology to deliver the curriculum and specially designed instruction more effectively.
  • Communicates high and clear expectations.
  • Assists students in monitoring their own progress and engaging in reflection and iteration of learning, connected to Visible Learning strategies.
  • Contributes to collaborative planning activities.
  • Consults and collaborates regularly and professionally with colleagues, students, and parents; communicates immediately with all when there are concerns.
  • Takes responsibility for personal professional growth.
  • Participates in school events and in-school and/or department improvement efforts.
  • Performs administrative duties, including budgeting, ordering supplies, etc., as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
