About The Position

This position will work in two capacities with half of their schedule as a Math Coach for the West Math Team and the other half as a Secondary Math Teacher, thus making one full-time position. Math Coaches have specialized knowledge of mathematics, research, effective instructional strategies, and varied assessment practices. Coaches support the district, schools, teams, and individual educators to successfully meet high standards and to increase student achievement. As a collaborative partner, coaches provide ongoing, differentiated, and job embedded professional learning. Secondary Math Teachers plan and provide instruction to students based on state, District, and school curricula and requirements, and based on the students’ social and other formative needs. This position reports to the principal or their designee.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, math, or a related field.
  • Valid Professional Utah Educator License and a Math Level 3 endorsement, a valid Secondary Educator License and Math endorsement from another state that is transferrable to Utah, or will complete a teaching program prior to the contract start date that will lead to a Professional Utah Secondary Educator License and a Math Level 3 endorsement.
  • Five (5) years of classroom teaching experience in licensed K-12 mathematics courses.
  • Professional communication skills including, but not limited to: excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident, articulate, and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.

  • Valid Professional Utah Math Level 4 endorsement, or will obtain one within 3 years of hire.
  • Valid Professional Utah ESL endorsement, or will obtain within 4 years of hire.
  • Valid Professional Utah Instructional endorsement, or will obtain within 4 years of hire.
  • Three (3) years of instructional coaching or other leadership experience with adults (i.e. mentoring, department lead or chair, grade level team lead).
  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of mathematics, including the developmental stages and/or standards for appropriate age and grade levels; Utah Core State Standards and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics; and research in mathematics, pedagogy, best practices, curriculum, and data.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations in collaborative groups and varied roles
  • Spanish Speaker: speaks, reads, writes and understands spoken Spanish.
  • Experience with grade level/content PLC’s/data meetings for analysis of student data to inform instructional practices for highest student achievement.
  • Knowledge of effective English Language Learners teaching practices; student social-emotional learning, accelerated/extended learning programs and special needs students, including laws and regulations of special education and 504 plans.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience building collaborative/cooperative relationships.
  • Understanding of the value of data and appropriate use of assessment strategies and tools to support teachers in meeting student needs.
  • Ability to effectively use technology for various purposes, including teaching mathematics, and using platforms (like Performance Matters) in creating core aligned assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Guides other educators in collecting, understanding, analyzing, and interpreting student generated data and using those findings to improve instruction.
  • Build collective capacity by engaging teachers in coherent and on-going professional learning that supports continuous growth of pedagogical content knowledge in math education.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with district personnel, school administrators, and teachers and education stakeholders.
  • Provide job-embedded professional learning which includes collaborative strategic planning, goalsetting around improving pedagogy, student-centered data collection, and teacher-centered reflective practice.
  • Work as a learning partner with reflective practice using knowledge of current content and pedagogical research to empower teachers as expert practitioners.
  • Build capacity in individuals as change agents for site-based shifts in coherent, accessible three-dimensional math instruction for all students.
  • Utilize a cohort model of collaborative learning designed by the District math department and supported by the coach.
  • Adapts and improves practice based on reflection and new learning.
  • Engages in learning experiences to enhance self and support others.
  • Participates actively in decision-making processes while building a shared culture that affects the school and larger educational community.
  • Advocates for the learner, the school, the community, and the profession.
  • Creates developmentally and linguistically appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
  • Develops lessons that are accessible and culturally relevant based on individual students’ strengths, interest and needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Utah Core Standards and references them in short- and long-term planning.
  • Incorporates disciplinary-specific literacy skills into instruction to purposefully engage learners in interacting with content knowledge.
  • Develops learning experiences that engage and support students as self-directed learners who internalize classroom routines, expectations, and procedures.
  • Collaborates with students to establish a positive learning climate of openness, respectful interactions, support, and inquiry.
  • Utilizes positive classroom management strategies, including the resources of time, space, and attention effectively.
  • Bases instruction on accurate content knowledge using multiple representations of concepts and appropriate academic language.
  • Practices a range of developmentally and culturally appropriate instructional strategies that engage and meet the needs of individuals and groups of learners.
  • Provides multiple opportunities for students to develop higher-order and meta-cognitive skills.
  • Supports and expands English language development and communication skills through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Uses a variety of available and appropriate technology and resources to support learning.
  • Allows students different ways to demonstrate learning sensitive to multiple experiences and diversity, while holding high expectations.
  • Uses both formative and summative data sources to assess the effectiveness of instruction and to make adjustments in planning and instruction.
  • Documents student progress and provides descriptive feedback to students, parents, and other stakeholders in a variety of ways.
  • Collaborates with families, colleagues and other professional to promote student growth and development.
  • Is responsible for compliance with federal and state laws, State Board of Education administrative rules, state assessment polices, Salt Lake City School District board policies and supervisory directives.
  • Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-530 Utah Effective Educator Standards at all levels to teacher development.
  • Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-515 Utah Educator Professional Standards.
  • Maintain professional workplace etiquette and represents the department/district in a professional manner; communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and other district employees.
  • Demonstrates adaptability and understanding of cultural differences in working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance for fulfilling job requirements efficiently and effectively.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the school.
