About The Position

The Greater Philadelphia YMCA is hiring a Seasonal Unit Leader for overnight camp at Camp Speers in the Poconos. The role supports a positive summer camp community, helps children reach their potential, and promotes age-appropriate goals and development. The Unit Leader monitors, trains, coaches, and supports camp staff; oversees activities; promotes camper safety and appropriate behavior; and communicates with parents or guardians. The YMCA describes the role as an opportunity to learn and grow while contributing to a nonprofit organization that strengthens the community.

Requirements

Be at least 18 years old.
Be a high school graduate or equivalent, or be enrolled in at least two years of child development coursework approved by state licensing requirements.
Have experience working with children and at least two seasons of experience as a Y Camp Counselor or counselor in a comparable program.
Demonstrate enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience, and experience working with children.
Be able to lead and motivate a team.
Be able to handle inappropriate behavior effectively and recognize hazardous situations.

Responsibilities

Monitor and train staff to support effective implementation of programs and activities and adherence to policies and procedures.
Coach and train staff to provide a quality camping experience.
Plan and oversee a variety of camp activities, ensuring they are age-appropriate and support campers’ growth and development.
Identify, address, and redirect or correct inappropriate behavior.
Help ensure appropriate behavior among campers and staff to reduce the risk of accidents.
Assist with effective communication with parents and guardians about campers and camp activities.
