About The Position

The Seasonal Unit Leader works at Camp Speers in the Poconos in an overnight summer camp setting. The role supports children’s growth and development by planning and overseeing age-appropriate camp activities, coaching and training staff, and helping provide a positive camping experience. The Unit Leader also helps maintain camper safety, communicates with parents or guardians, and embodies the YMCA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The position is seasonal and pays $400–$450 per week.

Requirements

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Be a high school graduate or equivalent, or be enrolled in at least two years of child development coursework approved by state licensing requirements.
• Have experience working with children and at least two seasons of experience as a Y Camp Counselor or counselor in a comparable program.
• Bring enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience, and experience working with children.
• Be able to lead and motivate a team.
• Be able to deal effectively with inappropriate behavior and recognize hazardous situations.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and train staff to support effective implementation of programs and activities.
• Ensure staff follow policies and procedures.
• Coach and train staff in providing a quality camping experience.
• Plan and oversee a variety of camp activities, ensuring they are age-appropriate and contribute to campers’ growth and development.
• Identify, address, and redirect or correct inappropriate behavior.
• Promote appropriate behavior among campers and staff to reduce the risk of accidents.
• Assist in maintaining effective communication with parents or guardians about campers and camp activities.
• Demonstrate the GPY commitment to diversity and inclusion, regardless of race, color, creed, or gender identification.
