About The Position

Hydrant Maintenance Worker The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for Seasonal Hydrant Maintenance Workers for the Shelby Township Fire Department. This is seasonal work during the Spring and Fall months. Work hours may vary but typically range between 30-40 hours per week during peak periods. Applications must include a copy of your Driver's License and will be accepted until the position is filled. Compensation Hourly Rate: $25.00 per hour. This position is not eligible for benefits. Job Summary The Seasonal Hydrant Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing routine inspections, testing, and minor maintenance on fire hydrants throughout Shelby Township. This position ensures hydrants are operational and accessible for emergency use. Work is conducted primarily outdoors during the spring and fall seasons.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Prior experience in Public Works, Fire Service, or Water System Maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
  • Basic mechanical skills and ability to use hand tools.
  • Physical ability to perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with a clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual inspections of fire hydrants for damage, leaks, and obstructions.
  • Conduct operational testing, including opening and flowing hydrants to check water pressure and functionality.
  • Lubricate hydrant components as necessary.
  • Pump hydrant dry.
  • Report debris, grass, and other obstructions to ensure hydrant accessibility.
  • Report damaged or malfunctioning hydrants for repair.
  • Document findings and complete hydrant inspection reports.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Fire Department.
