About The Position

This position is open until filled. Applications are being reviewed as they are received. These are entry-level positions in either the Westerville Electric or Parks Maintenance Divisions. Electric Apprentice: This is entry-level, apprentice line work assisting in and performing restoration, installation, and construction of underground and overhead electrical lines on a shift. The employee learns and practices in order to advance to other tasks as assigned. Work involves assisting in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, prepares material for other lineworkers, operating assigned equipment, and performs a variety of other tasks as a member of crews involved in construction, maintenance, and extension of electric lines. Parks Maintenance Apprentice: The Parks Maintenance Pre-Apprentice Internship is an entry-level, hands-on learning opportunity. Pre-apprentices will rotate through experiences assisting with general park maintenance, urban forestry, horticulture and turf maintenance operations. Work involves learning industry best practices, preparing materials and equipment, operating machinery, and supporting crews in the field. This position is designed to prepare the pre-apprentice for a future career in parks and recreation grounds maintenance operations.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma and willingness to enter into a power line worker course; or any equivalent combination of training assigned by the City, which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Ability to learn and apply the practices, methods, and tools, and equipment used in the installation, extension, and repair of electric lines.
  • Ability to learn occupational hazards of the job.
  • Ability to learn and apply safe and correct use of heavy equipment, hand and power tools common to the work.
  • Ability to learn and apply electrical theory.
  • Ability to climb poles and assist in performing maintenance on electric lines.
  • Ability to work precisely under extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the job including pole climbing.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to properly use a variety of line tools.
  • Ability to operate tools and heavy equipment used in electrical distribution installation, maintenance, and repair operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Availability for twenty-hour emergency call-ins.
  • Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license.
  • Enrollment in high school or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • General knowledge of occupational hazards and workplace safety practices.
  • Basic knowledge of the safe and correct use of tools and equipment related to park maintenance, urban forestry and horticulture operations.
  • Willingness to learn to operate various types of equipment and to learn to climb trees.
  • Physical ability to meet the strenuous demands of climbing, lifting, digging, and other fieldwork.
  • Ability to properly use power tools, hand tools, and operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest or basic knowledge in parks maintenance, urban forestry, turf and horticulture operations a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the installation of transformers, arrestors, reclosers, switches, fuses, capacitors, street light cables, electric poles.
  • Installs underground electrical distribution cables and overhead lines; constructs and installs pedestals and other distribution equipment; assists in repair of failed electrical equipment.
  • Operates bucket and digger trucks, trenching machines, backhoe, forklift, cable locating and other equipment.
  • Operates power and hand tools and may perform ground work, including preparing material for Lineworker I or II and stocking truck with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains trucks and equipment.
  • Completes required reports and documentation for material use and equipment maintenance.
  • Performs urban forestry work including planting, pruning, removal and stump grinding.
  • Performs a variety of landscaping maintenance work on park and city grounds including pruning, weeding, mulching, planting, watering and spraying weeds.
  • Performs turf maintenance operations including mowing, fertilization and herbicide applications and irrigation servicing and repairs.
  • Performs general park maintenance work including cleaning restrooms and shelters, collecting trash, picking up litter, painting, snow and ice removal, light construction and performing basic park inspections.
