SDET Manager

Epic Games•Cary, NC

About The Position

Epic Games is seeking a SDET Manager to lead and grow a team of software development engineers in test for Unreal Engine. The role combines hands-on software engineering with team leadership: building automated test coverage, maintaining production-quality test frameworks and tools, and shaping test strategy and roadmaps. The manager will mentor SDETs, own the team's systems end to end, improve test and CI health visibility, and help influence the direction of the wider SDET organization.

Requirements

  • Experience leading software engineering teams, including mentorship, technical roadmaps, trade-offs, and prioritization.
  • A track record of writing and shipping production code while leading a team.
  • Current, hands-on proficiency in C++ and at least one of C#, Python, or TypeScript.
  • Strong knowledge of how game engines work.
  • Experience with automation frameworks and continuous integration at scale.
  • Experience setting test strategy across unit, integration, and end-to-end levels.
  • Experience using AI coding tools in engineering work and good judgment about when their output can be trusted.
  • Ability to learn complex technology stacks quickly and extend existing investments rather than bypass them.
  • Clear written communication with engineers, producers, and leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Unreal Engine 5 experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of SDETs building automated test coverage across Unreal Engine, and mentor and coach SDETs at every career stage.
  • Write and ship production code in the team's test frameworks, tools, and CI integrations; own the team's systems, including design, reliability, and maintenance.
  • Set the team's test roadmap, covering unit and API tests through input-driven end-to-end tests of the editor and runtime.
  • Extend existing low-level, integration, and end-to-end testing frameworks.
  • Convert manual test cases into automated coverage and keep committed tests deterministic and reproducible on any machine.
  • Use AI-assisted tools to accelerate tool and framework development, test authoring, failure triage, and flake analysis.
  • Increase visibility into test coverage and CI health for engineering leadership.
  • Influence the vision for Epic's wider SDET organization.

Benefits

  • 100% of medical, dental, vision HRA, long-term disability, and life insurance premiums paid for employees and dependents.
  • 401(k) with competitive match.
